Back in the 1960s and 70s the Quay area of Dundalk could boast 16 active pubs which were kept busy by a thriving community. Today that number has been whittled to a mere four, but one that has stood the test of time and is hugely popular with locals and many others is Kehoe's bar on the corner of Quay Street and St. Joseph's Park (The Sand Hole) that remains in favour and is a bustling hive of activity. The bar itself can be traced back to the early 1930s when it started life as a grocery shop with a small snug attached that helped to service the area. The premises was originally owned by the O'Callaghan family who had three sons. One became a priest, one an engineer and son Dick eventually took over the running of the bar from his parents in the mid 1960s after they had built up a thriving business in a very competitive area.
