Loved ones and we are in a remote corner of the pacific where 75 years after world war 2 the search for Fallen Soldiers goes on. Thank you for joining us in a dramatic escalation of iraqs antigovernment protests crowds have torched the rainy and consulates in the holy city of najaf 100 surrounded the building lighting tires blankets and anything else they could find while chanting iran out they accuse tehran of propping up iraqs government which have been railing against for 2 months. Not earlier we spoke to our reporter mommy job until an on the phone from baghdad he explained more about how suspicion and im sure about iran has played into the post. Theres a good old eric here in the by by the thousands and our government demonstrators that. Is far too beholden to store in powers and among those foreign powers that are exerting too much influence in this country is the country which is their neighbor and that they will work extraordinary about what happened this evening is that the iranian consulate. In jest which is the. Shia religious authority was attacked. Majority city and they didnt like government demonstrators there are you know. Showcasing their anger about the fact that they believe it is evolving with the dirty too much power in iraq by going and storming the compound where the Iranian Embassy is house so this is a very big signal the government there is growing discontent that iran is far too much present in Iraq Internal Affairs now this again all playing out against the Antigovernment Movement that is growing you see several cities despite the specter of violence despite the clashes that continue to happen every time the ego out here square here in the capital of the epicenter of the anti that statement the protesters say theyre going to continue to come out until they see the government actually responding to their demands. Lets discuss this further now with not air shammy director of the center for middle east studies at the university of denver thank you so much for being with us iraqis have been taking to the streets in the thousands since october just how serious do you think an escalation is this attack on the iranian consulate in najaf what does it tell us about where the protest movement is heading. Well it suggests an escalation and an expansion of these protests i mean the symbolic importance of the attack on the iranian consulate in one show off you know cannot be understated this is the city where the Ayatollah Khomeini used to live its considered to be you know the heart of the shia muslim world and iran thought that it had the population iraqi shia population on its side in terms of its you know regional policies clearly thats not the case and so i think this is a very Important Development as you say what you have is mostly shia protests is demonstrating against the violence perceived influence a do you see iran responding in many way after this. Well its very difficult to see how they can respond because the natural sort of constituency of supporters that iran has relied upon to expand its influence in the middle east has been in and among shia communities so if it responds with brutal force as it has responded recently within iran over the last week to crush very similar protests. That runs the risk of you know losing in tehran support in in in iraq and throughout the broader region so its unclear you know what options the government in iran has in response to these protests i dont think they have very good options and as i suspect right now there is deep panic and paranoia in terror on over what happened today in najaf how could these antigovernment protests whether its in iraq or lebanon and even within iran itself as you mentioned how could they impact irans influence in the region could we see tehrans regional influence reduced in the long run if these demonstrations continue. Well i think so because of you know iran is playing a very Important Role you know behind the scenes in terms of controlling iraqi politics last week there was this major leak of cables that the New York Times and the intercept published that effectively you know documented that you know you rock is a is a vassal state of the Islamic Republic of iran if iran chooses to clamp down hard and to crush protests by you know killing large numbers of people that effectively means that the the population will start to turn on the Islamic Republic of iran in turn on its allies in these Capital Cities of beirut and in any about died in that will you know undermine the broad sort of. Soft power that iran has wielded among shia communities in the middle east for a very long time so the risks are very high i think it does represent a sea change because i dont see these protests you know stopping anytime soon theyre rooted in Court Economic and political grievances that dont have easy solutions so this isnt mary in many ways a game changer in terms of irans regional influence thank you so much for your insights and speaking to us about this not me from the from the university of denver joining us there live from denver thank you very much for your time and other world news at least 1000 people have been killed in another rebel attack in the east of the democratic republic of congo this is a volatile region where un peacekeepers have been targeted by locals who say theyre failing to protect them from a group called the i lied to Democratic Forces are suspected of being behind the attack on a village near the city of theyve been blamed for a string of recent massacres iran benny which sponsored the violent protests against the un and the Congolese Army catherine so he reports from the provincial capital goma. To kenya now where government Recovery Efforts have been stretched beyond their limits by devastating flooding and landslides thats left people trying to try to dig for the remains of missing loved ones themselves mama dada reports from the village of tom kyle in west spoke caught county. Mexicos government has expressed anger about a u. S. Malls that would designate mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations present donald trump had promised earlier this month to take action against mexican cartels after 9 americans from the same family was shot dead mexicos president says he wants corporation not interventionism live to alan fischer in mexico city for as salaam bells ringing in mexico city and mexico in general allen how will the Mexican Government handle this while they try to stop the. Well there is big concern here in mexico for a number of reasons 1st of all if the United States does go ahead and designate the cartels as terrorist organizations people here are worried that the United States may then launch attacks into mexican territory they could use a drone strike to take out a Cartel Leader in the way that theyve attacked senior terrorist figures in the middle east they are why they choose that americans might stop coming across the border on vacation who wants to go to a country where terrorist organizations control large parts but people also see this as donald trump appealing to his Political Base remember this was a man who launched his Political Campaign by saying that mexico sent rapists and criminals to america they think he is simply pandering to them and therefore theyre going to see what they can do to try and stop donald trump taking a step that they think is ill considered and dangerous. The death of 9 americans in a Cartel Ambush earlier this month sparked widespread outrage the victims 3 women 6 children were traveling through a remote area in northern mexico when they were attacked jule u. S. Mexican citizens the family the labatt ins demanded the white house designate mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations youre going to do a telephone interview with a right wing talk host President Donald Trump said the process is underway ive been working on that for the last name the day as you know designation is not that easy you know i dont go to a process. Mexicos drug cartels are huge operations they control large chunks of the country and are involved in Drug Trafficking assassinations kidnapping and political corruption being designated a terrorist organization by america means it becomes illegal for anyone to knowingly support the groups if banks realize they handle any cartel funds they must block the money under and form the government a new members are banned from entering the u. S. And so taking this move while it might benefit the president in the United States it might make people feel righteous and justified in satisfied here that were taking stronger steps ultimately may make it harder to do business with the mexicans and we need to be a team with them in order to get this Problem Solved mexicos policy on fighting the cartels has changed under the new president and todays man well as obrador whos been in Office Almost exactly a year he believes in hugs not bullets and that social conditions need to change to make the cartels less economically powerful got bit as young see cooperation yes interventionism no. But one expert says if the u. S. President follows through on his threat to clear out the cartels and uses military action there could be significant mexican backlash with this they do a side it can stay in mexico and organize who are one attack or something against the mexican cartels in mexico. And this is the problem because mexico is. Tha
