Androscoggin County suing Department of Corrections for housing their inmates

Androscoggin County is suing the Maine Department of Corrections and its commissioner to try and recoup costs associated with housing state inmates during the pandemic.
The civil complaint filed in Androscoggin County Court references a May 15 executive order from Governor Janet Mills which, the county says, allowed the commissioner of the Department of Corrections to block the transfer of state inmates at county jails to state prisons. Sign up for our Newsletters
“The state sought to protect its own facilities, its own employees, and its own already-incarcerated prisoners from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said the county’s attorney Peter Marchesi in a press release.
