Maine Lawmakers Consider Proposal To Close Youth Correctional Facility

Some lawmakers, advocates and former residents of the Long Creek Youth Development Center are urging members of the Legislature’s Criminal Justice Committee to support legislation that would close the facility within the next two years.
Long Creek, the state’s youth correctional facility, has a budget of over $18 million a year to house about 28 individuals. That works out to about $700,000 a year per resident.
Democratic state Rep. Grayson Lookner of Portland, who sponsored the bill, says there are better ways to use that money to treat young offenders.
“That amount of spending has not mitigated or reduced the fact that Long Creek has been a place of violence and trauma for young people too long,” he says. ....

Androscoggin County suing Department of Corrections for housing their inmates

Androscoggin County is suing the Maine Department of Corrections and its commissioner to try and recoup costs associated with housing state inmates during the pandemic.
The civil complaint filed in Androscoggin County Court references a May 15 executive order from Governor Janet Mills which, the county says, allowed the commissioner of the Department of Corrections to block the transfer of state inmates at county jails to state prisons. Sign up for our Newsletters
“The state sought to protect its own facilities, its own employees, and its own already-incarcerated prisoners from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said the county’s attorney Peter Marchesi in a press release. ....

Sarah Sherman is well-known for her commitment to preserving the experiences of veterans. She wrote “Southport: The War Years, An Island Remembers” in 1996, “Heroes Among Us: A History of Boothbay Region s Veterans During the Second World War” in 1999 and “Looking Back: A History of Boothbay Region’s Veterans during the Korean and Vietnam Wars,” Volumes I and II, in 2016.
Sherman was hired in 2018 as director of strategic partnerships for the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services and, for the last two years, she has worked with Kennebec County Sheriff and Marine Corps veteran Ken Mason and Programs Director Jess Quinn and later Programs Director Valerie Grant to facilitate a weekly, one-hour writing group for veterans incarcerated at Kennebec County Jail. Sherman also credited her affiliations with the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Serv ....
