For Douglas Hodgkin, the history at the Androscoggin County Historical Society is his own. A descendent of Jonathan Hodgkin, an original settler in the late 1770s, some of the artifacts housed in the rooms at the top of the Androscoggin County Courthouse in Auburn are ones his family is intimately connected to.
Though he didn’t know the “depth” of his ancestry, Hodgkin joined the society because he knew it was “part of my heritage.” He quickly worked his way up to becoming the president, though currently he is the newsletter editor, secretary, and the Collection Committee chair. ....

Daring to dream big, the Androscoggin County Commission brainstormed about potential projects and ideas on how to spend a $21 million windfall from the American Rescue Plan.
Hazard pay for all Androscoggin County employees. Stimulus checks for all county residents. Money to help nonprofits such as veterans’ organizations. Trust fund to guarantee loans. Update and replace HVAC, heat and air conditioning at the aging Androscoggin County Courthouse and jail.
Everything was on the table Wednesday as commissioners spent nearly 45 minutes pondering a potential wish list of needed and worthwhile projects that could never be funded without a significant increase in county taxes. ....

Androscoggin County suing Department of Corrections for housing their inmates

Androscoggin County is suing the Maine Department of Corrections and its commissioner to try and recoup costs associated with housing state inmates during the pandemic.
The civil complaint filed in Androscoggin County Court references a May 15 executive order from Governor Janet Mills which, the county says, allowed the commissioner of the Department of Corrections to block the transfer of state inmates at county jails to state prisons. Sign up for our Newsletters
“The state sought to protect its own facilities, its own employees, and its own already-incarcerated prisoners from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said the county’s attorney Peter Marchesi in a press release. ....
