Association of Cuban residents in Portugal recalls ties with Africa Association of Cuban residents in Portugal recalls ties with Africa Lisbon, May 25 (Prensa Latina) The Yoruba Cultural Association of Cuba-Subsidiary in Portugal on Tuesday recalled its country's ties with Africa on Africa Day, May 25. Everybody is of African descent because they come from Mother Africa, their diaspora in Latin America and the world, the group said in a statement. Ghanaian poet Atukwei Okai said that Cuba is African and Africa cannot be understood without Cuba; and African culture is undoubtedly an essential component of our identity, he recalled. He also pointed out that this process of transculturation, as Cuban ethnologist Fernando Ortiz called it, defined the bonds between the African and Cuban peoples throughout history.
