Back in the day: News from April 22, 1892 Linda Ciangi THE IONIA DAILY SENTINEL, THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 1892. LOCAL LACONICS: The wonderful clock on exhibit at 434 W. Main street for the benefit of the Lutheran church is a wonderful piece of mechanism. Everyone who has seen it wants to see it again. THE IONIA SOUVENIR SPOON: One of the fads of the day is the souvenir spoon. Unlike most fads, it has an intrinsic as well as an artistic value. Various souvenir spoons have been seen here lately, but the first that have any local character have just been received by Al. H. Geck. There are two varieties, an orange spoon in bright silver, and a teaspoon with an oxidized handle. Both are of artistic design and workmanship and of sterling silver. Both spoons have a chased bowl, in the center of which appears the word "Ionia." The handle contains the word "Michigan" in relief and at the top is clearly presented the coat of arms of the state. A number of the spoons may be seen day and evening in Geck's west window, interspersed among a rich display of watches.
