Belmont Select Board vs. Columbus Day Guy Carbone Special to the Citizen-Herald Previously the Belmont-Citizen Herald published two guest commentaries submitted by the undersigned related to terminating Columbus Day as a holiday and substituting in its place Indigenous Peoples Day. For purposes of background to this writing, those two Commentaries are incorporated herein by reference. The following is based on the writings of two scholars concerning Columbus, to wit, Professor Carol Delaney's book "Columbus and the Quest for Jerusalem,” New York: Free Press/Simon & Schuster, Inc., 2011, and eminent scholarly works of Professor Samuel Eliot Morison who received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1912, and taught history at the university for 40 years. The two books by Professor Morison are “Journals and Other Documents on the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus,” New York: Heritage Press, 1963, and an earlier scholarly work "Admiral of the Ocean Sea: A Life of Christopher Columbus, " 2 Volumes, Boston: Little Brown, 1942, for which he won a Pulitzer Prize.
