Cape Cod Times State officials responding to a local outbreak of COVID-19 have detected 68 cases of "variants of concern" on Cape Cod, including 88% of the state’s P.1 cases. Genetic sequencing of positive COVID-19 cases in the past week in Barnstable County has resulted in the identification of 50 cases of the P.1 virus variant that originated in Brazil, according to the state Department of Public Health. That's all but seven of the 57 cases of P.1 that have been detected statewide, the DPH said. The state’s first case, announced March 16, was a Barnstable County woman in her 30s. Genetic sequencing of Barnstable County cases also has identified 18 cases of the B.1.1.7 variant first detected in the United Kingdom, according to the DPH.
