ELLSWORTH — “More than 200 recipes celebrate Maine home cooking in a way that reminds us that the food we eat connects us to the people and places we love.” That’s the essence of the Maine Bicentennial Community Cookbook, whose editors Margaret Hathaway, Karl Schatz and Don Lindgren will speak online about the cookbook’s contents and the behind-the-scenes work at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 8, through the Ellsworth Public Library.
For the milestone, celebratory cookbook, its editors collected recipes, stories and photos from kitchens across the state. Contributions ranged widely from everyday families and home cooks to award-winning chefs and notable Mainers. Mixing contemporary recipes with excerpts from historic Maine community cookbooks and essays about the history and future of Maine’s culinary traditions, the cookbook is illustrated with family photos and hand-written recipe cards from all 16 counties. Two dollars from each cookbook sale goes to organizations fighting food insecurity in Maine. To date, the cookbook has generated more than $14,000 in the fight against hunger.
