China has decided to experiment with constructing an undersea data center in a bid to significantly cut cooling costs.
As Reuters reports, the design of the data center has been finalized and a location selected off the coast of the southern island province of Hainan. The project is a collaboration between the local Hainan government, maritime tech company Highlander, and ISP Beijing Sinnet, but it remains unclear who is ultimately funding what is thought to be a very expensive project.
The submerged data center will be tiny compared to those on land, which typically have between 50,000 and 80,000 servers. This data center will contain 100 data cabinets. Assuming they are standard height, each one should be able to house 42 1U servers, allowing for a total of 4,200 servers to be operated.
