Christchurch and Miami: Two building collapses, one common theme

A wing of a 12-storey beachfront condo building collapsed in a town outside Miami on June 24.
Now, it’s important to stress that CTV and Champlain are very different disasters. They happened in different places, under different conditions where different building regulations applied. One of them collapsed in the earthquake. The other one just collapsed.
Buildings collapse on themselves because their core structural elements are unable to withstand the forces placed on them. Whether those forces are from an earthquake, the building’s own weight, or something else.
But with CTV and Miami there were inescapable similarities. In both cases, it appears elements of the building were weaker than intended because of inadequate design and/or construction. This made them more susceptible to the aforementioned forces.
