By Steve Gilbert Invalid date NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- While rumors continued to swirl about a high-profile deal involving Justin Upton, the D-backs went about filling some of their bench needs on Wednesday at the Winter Meetings, agreeing to one-year deals with third baseman Eric Chavez and catcher Wil Nieves. Chavez, who turns 35 this week, will likely see a good deal of playing time at third base, along with the right-handed-hitting Chris Johnson. Given Chavez's age and injury history, the D-backs would like to keep him to 300 to 400 plate appearances. "He'd been kind of a target guy from the get-go," D-backs general manager Kevin Towers said of Chavez, who resides in the Phoenix area. "I think our park kind of caters to his swing. It's home for him, and there's something to be said for that. He's going to be at home and around his family in a comfortable environment. We thought it was a good fit."
