D-backs add Chavez, Nieves to bolster bench

NASHVILLE, Tenn. While rumors continued to swirl about a high-profile deal involving Justin Upton, the D-backs went about filling some of their bench needs on Wednesday at the Winter Meetings, agreeing to one-year deals with third baseman Eric Chavez and catcher Wil Nieves.
Chavez, who turns 35 this week, will likely see a good deal of playing time at third base, along with the right-handed-hitting Chris Johnson. Given Chavez s age and injury history, the D-backs would like to keep him to 300 to 400 plate appearances.
He d been kind of a target guy from the get-go, D-backs general manager Kevin Towers said of Chavez, who resides in the Phoenix area. I think our park kind of caters to his swing. It s home for him, and there s something to be said for that. He s going to be at home and around his family in a comfortable environment. We thought it was a good fit. ....
