And the e. U. Or European Union leaders are processing the conservative victory in planning their own way forward at this hour of brussels summit back to the European Commission president green deal it pledges to make the e. U. Carbon neutral in the coming decades. Im brian thomas great to have you with us britains conservatives have won an overall majority in the countrys general election decisively ending 3 and a half years of political gridlock the Opposition Labor Party they are on course for an historic defeat after a near wipe out in their traditional heartlands in the early hours a Prime Minister johnson appeared at his own constituency count and said his government had been given a powerful new mandate to finally take the e. U. Out of the year the u. K. Rather out of the European Union the labor party blamed bracks it for their crushing losses with some seats still to declare heres a snapshot of the results as we go to air. Well as you can see here the conservatives have won in outright majority passion passing that crucial 326 seed threshold with some constituency still to declare the final results now this could be the biggest conservative victories since Margaret Thatcher in 1974 the labor party its one of their worst nights ever they lost dozens of seats to the conservatives and Jeremy Corbyn says he will now step down before the next election lets talk more here in the studio where with our political expert for the u. K. Alex Forrest Whiting good morning alex and in london we have our correspondent big mask good morning to you a baggage in london lets start there in the british capital can you give us a sense of how big this victory is for the conservatives. Its really a big shift its a Seismic Shift here in the u. K. He brags it is really transformed the Political Landscape in so far as labor lost seats where people voted to leave the e. U. In the referendum which were the heartlands which were seats where there was never a conservative candidate for 400. 00 never a conservative m. P. For 400 years and these are the areas these are the constituencies that the conservatives were able to get this breakthrough and to get this big swing really for them ok it was certainly a big swing i mean what was behind this conservative victory and the massive losses were seeing the breaking of the red ball of labor lets just talk about that red wall because it is incredible when you look at some of the seats that labor have lost to the conservatives tony blair the most successful labor Prime Minister ever his former seat of such field has gone blue its gone tory bassett claw a seat thats been in labor for decades an 18 percent swing to the conservatives im somebody called the beast of polls hes done hes going to hes been an labor m. P. Since 1970 nost his seat it has gone blue gone tory so this is really really bad news for labor what happened well we know that Boris Johnsons bracks it very simple message get back to don broke so many of those labor formulated supporters want breaks it to happen they voted for him but its more than that i think it was Jeremy Corbin many people including labor voters didnt like Jeremy Corbyn he didnt like they didnt like what he stood for they didnt feel that he was a leader and although maybe they didnt they dont love Boris Johnson in their minds he was considered more of a leader than than Jeremy Corbyn and that has really hurt labor even though at the moment many of them are not admitting that ok so it came down to a race between 2 men and how they portray themselves to the public is well lets take a listen now to what Boris Johnson had to say earlier today. But i thought oh i want to thank i want to thank the people of this country for turning out to vote in a december election that we didnt want to call it which i think has turned out to be a historic election that gives us now in this new government the chance to respect the democratic will of the british people to change this country for the better and to unleash the potential of the entire people of this country and that is what we will not do and if we are lucky enough to be returned as the polls as the exit polls seem to suggest then that work will begin tomorrow thank you all very much or i should say not tomorrow today. Thank you thank you all very much thank you thank you ok its more than the exit polls we now have confirmation that it is a conservative victory a bear get what happens now for the process can you give us an idea of the timeline. Boris johnson had this clear message that went on really well with the voters that hes going to get bricks it done he made it sound very easy and in fact for now it is going to be easy for him because here in parliament he does have the majority he needs to get the Withdrawal Agreement to get the deal the withdrawal over the line however thats it will be followed next year by negotiations about the future of the u. K. Within the European Union what kind of security arrangements what kind of free trade deal will there be with the u. K. In the e. U. He has said that he will negotiate that within a few months and that by the end of next year this will be done now there are many experts here who say normally that takes years and its very unlikely that he can get it done in such a short time so this will be the next steps and of january the u. K. Will most likely be out and then end of the year Boris Johnson hopes to have the new agreement with the e. U. In place but we will see whether thats realistic or not ok we will. Have been reporting on Boris Johnson work many years going back to his days as mayor of london now its a question of pulling the nation together the nation remains divided does he have the character is he the man to pull britain together well this is the question he has now a huge mandate can he use that to go back to the Center Ground all week going to see the Boris Johnson who was the very successful naresh london or are we going to continue to see the Boris Johnson who has top tax right who has appealed to the right of his party will not continue i think we will see him potentially move more Center Ground but there are 2 sides to johnson as i can tell you know. Throughout the Election Campaign Boris Johnson drove home one message. And it seems his publicist his stunts up and down the country have paid off. Easy to get pretty well hes of the public if you keep it in the back. He made it all look so easy but it times johnsons carefully choreographed campaign ran into real life problems he struggled to deal with a reporters question about a sick 4 year old boy forced to lie in a hospital floor in Northern England because of a lack of beds. Like my phone put it in your pocket when the stuff his mother says the n. H. S. Is in crisis. Its a terrible terrible. And his critics say this is the real face of Boris Johnson a dangerous politician who makes empty promises including if it breaks it can you make a promise today to the British Public that you will not go back to brussels and ask for another delay to years and so young and rich. Johnson was of course forced to break that promise and to quest another delay from the e. U. He was also accused of ripping up the rule book by suspending British Parliament in order to try to force m. P. s to back his bricks and deal the Supreme Court ruled that move was unlawful. Search setbacks seem a far cry from the Boris Johnson who spent 8 years as mare of london popular and personable it appeared this former journalist with a. Complicated private life was above the usual political conventions which were tied to any one of what ever rage who stood in his way johnsons ambition was never far from the surface. He always wanted to be Prime Minister many have been surprised at just how ruthless hes become even expelling 21. 00 of his own m. P. s including Winston Churchills grandson. Boris johnson now has the majority he needs to take the u. K. Out of the e. U. Fixing his divided country though would take much more than a few photo ops. Johnson is expected to speak shortly when he does we will go directly to the british Prime Minister to comment on who will be commenting on this victory were back with alex in the studio now our u. K. Political expert. Alex. Its a big issue right now in scotland in terms of independence or a possible referendum on independence not sure scotland with Northern Ireland as well a lot of problems there in terms of its unity with the old of the u. K. Does Boris Johnson now have as his one of his main challenges keeping the u. K. United absolutely i think that is going to be one of his main challenges weve just had the results through saying that the irish nationalists in Northern Ireland have won more seats in the pro british unionists that is very significant we already know that the scottish nationalists in scotland have done incredibly well in this election of both of them going to be sniping at Boris Johnsons hales the just important to point out that the irish nationalists dont necessarily take their seats in parliament for historic reasons but they are all going to be their employees johnson has to prove hes not just the Prime Minister of england he is the Prime Minister of the whole of the United Kingdom which is why i think he will have to move back to the Center Ground to be able to the promises that hes made to be able to put some of those into action to say im not just looking to those in england i am reaching out to those in scotland Northern Ireland and wales as well ok with a lot of supporters sentiment in all of those for Different Reasons and all of those regions bigot what can we expect to be now johnsons 1st priorities going into number 10 downing street with this kind of majority that he has now certainly bracks that but theres a lot else on his plate we just heard from alex issues about unity what is he going to focus on as a priority. I think really his immediate priority will be thats for sure he needs to get that done because before you can move on he wants to have parliament sit next week he wants to get a very quick queens speech his Government Program over the line and then you want parliamentarians and now is conservative parliamentarian so all behind him he wants them to vote for their withdrawal deal that he is agreed with the European Union says that will happen as soon as next week and then next next january he can then he can then move on and i think his whole Ambitious Program that he has eluded to. Process more money for their for the Health Service also we have problems with housing and crime still brechts it will be the dominating issue for for quite some time to come i dont think thats the cake that the Parliament Parents were left behind in the immediate months to deal with many other things other than breaks it and then in the long run yes there are many other problems that he has said he will fix. From london this morning alex Forrest Whiting in the studio thanks a lot oh. Well us president has sent congratulations to Boris Johnson on twitter from tweeting graduations to Boris Johnson on his great when britain and the United States will now be free to strike a massive new trade deal after u. S. President has long been a supporter of the u. K. Leaving the European Union. Well matheson is at the European Council in brussels looking at some of the response that were getting there at this hour lets cross over to brussels if we could we have confirmation now that Boris Johnson has won with an outright majority was that the outcome that european leaders were expecting i would say brian there are 2 sides to this of course on the one hand you have the situation that now the man who has i would say to finalize this deal that his predecessor to reset may already worked on with the e. U. That man is now in the driving seat and the e. U. Is quite confident that the deal they have worked so hard on will now get through parliament possibly even this year that is the good news the brother bad news for many in the e. U. Institutions but also in many Member States is the feeling that the false facts are what they would call it have won over the remains side has not been able to unite behind one party although many people voted in favor off remain and you know from the u. S. Perspective they never wanted to the u. K. To leave but now that really looks very certain ok theres a summit underway where you are right now and boards johnson has made clear hes going to push through with bracks and we have a deadline we just heard there january 31st what are the next steps where you are in brussels. Well presuming that this press a deal gets over the line before christmas that would mean that from february onwards one can talk about the future relationship now the slogan sounds nice getting breaks it down but what in reality it means at least 9 months to prevent heartbreaks its all a no deal brechts it and many here say another extension will be needed and will be interesting to how that pans out so so lots of work on the table for the e. U. Institutions regarding next year then also including other issues such as the green deal that that leaders talked about last night and my colleague max huffman gives you a clip of how the even think at in brussels where the 27 year leaders unfolded he has his report. First suspense. And then a little disappointment journalists in brussels knew the result of the u. K. Election means one thing that breaks it most likely will happen. But leaders focused on another topic that might fundamentally transform the e. U. In the years to come it was very interesting to see the leaders and or seeing and supporting. A complex European Green deal weve been debating all the opportunity brings along that debate took almost 10 hours the result of all Member States indorsed the goal of the u. Becoming climate neutral by 2050 but one country did not commit to actually implementing that goal poland. We agreed to the principle that poland can achieve climate neutrality at its own pace and she came out to snow. The reason for this exemption is that poland is heavily reliant on coal and fears the costs of transition to a greener economy the Country Holding back on a commitment seems like a serious setback to the deal but the german chancellor did not agree hes been wondering im quite content and if the circumstances change but europe is not divided into different parts we have one member state that needs a little more time to think about how to implement this so that we have a good outlook for success to him and a good dose east of and a frank it was not the outcome these activists had hoped for though before leaders kicked off their meeting they have tried to create a sense of urgency by bringing fire and smoke to the summit venue it appears the message did make it to everyone inside the building. A gay or climate neutrality by by 2050 that sounds very ambitious and is the. Is there a plan is there a roadmap in place to make that happen well if you look at the documents that was enough on the line that the head of the European Commission has put forward. There are few details with concrete proposals loading stations full full battery elect for electric cars for instance so but overall one has to say that the the way how this new targets that most leaders now agreed on will be implemented that they still still have to work out its also unclear what happens to Nuclear Energy to what extent that will still be supported so so lots of work to come on that front ok is the new Commission President on the line a fine line with her green deal reshaping the e. U. Or moving to reshape the at least for a post bracks a future. Well she clearly hit the ground running and seeing that she got that the support she has was just poland state saying on the sidelines for the moment one has to say because everyone knows that if they do want to see money and compensation they will have to play along so strong support for her ideas that is a strong signal and that is a good signal for an e. U. Post brecks it 27 Member States who have said yesterday again that the the unity we have seen regarding bracks it is something they do want to <
