Facebook, which also owns Instagram, today announced it would no longer allow this practice. "Starting in a few weeks, we'll only allow advertisers to target ads to people under 18 (older in certain countries) based on their age, gender and location," said the statement from Instagram. "This means that previously available targeting options, like those based on interests or on their activity on other apps and websites, will no longer be available to advertisers." Reset Australia welcomed the ban on advertising but said the social media giant had not committed to stopping profiling teenage users. "Facebook isn't saying it will stop profiling kids based on dubious interests, just that it will not let advertisers target them based on that," said Reset Australia executive director Chris Cooper.
