From the Archives, 1964: Hundreds hurt in wild crush to see

About fifty young people were taken to hospital, and 200 people were treated on the spot, as 20,000 hysterical fans waited outside the Southern Cross Hotel in Melbourne to greet the Beatles. Barricades were overrun and fights broke out as 300 policemen struggled to control the wild crowds.
