In this Article For Givenchy‘s Spring 2022 pre-collection, Creative Director Matthew M. Williams wanted to honor both his homeland and his current hometown. “In my collections, I always speak to lived reality,” Williams, who grew up in Pismo Beach, California, said in a release. “I wanted to bring together my American roots and my brand new life in Paris.” Williams’ first pre-collection runway show for Givenchy was inspired by his journey from the U.S. to France and uses a runway set in a Paris train yard as a metaphor for bridging the two cultures. Warm colors compliment a mix of textures and craft-inspired designs like a delicate spider web motif symbolize strength and fragility. Seattle-born, Mexico-based artist Chito helped develop airbrushed graphics for several pieces, combining several tailored House emblems with abstract motifs and cartoon-like characters. Chito’s signature clown figure pops up on jewelry, while delicate body harnesses create compelling contrast.
