Google's professional certificates train people without four-year degrees for entry-level tech jobs. It hopes the programs will unlock more diverse talent pools that Big Tech has routinely overlooked. But experts say it's unclear whether the programs will translate to more diverse hiring. Monique Harley was a 27-year-old single mother working an hourly-wage job at a call center outside Washington, DC, when she learned about Google's online certification program in IT support. Harley had a natural aptitude for science, but most of what she knew about computers she had learned from watching YouTube. She decided to go for it.
