The Navy has asked the state to shutter part of Ayers Street for the next month as it does runway work at Cabaniss Airfield. The Texas Department of Transportation on Tuesday closed a section of Ayers on the Southside, also known as Business 286. Ayers will be closed from just south of Pollex Avenue, about 1,000 feet south of Saratoga Boulevard, to the Greenwood Drive underpass at state Highway 286, which leads to the J.C. Elliott Collection Center. Cabaniss Airfield was an auxiliary field for Corpus Christi Naval Air Station during World War II and the Korean War. It closed in 1958 and is now used for touch-and-go circuit training of aircraft from NAS Corpus Christi.
