Snapchat, Snapdeal, Malaysia, Pakistan and, increasingly, China — the collective ire of consumers has often been directed against organisations, people and acts perceived as “hurting” national pride. Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel had allegedly said India is a “poor country”. Snapdeal’s brand ambassador at the time Aamir Khan had spoken about anti-minority sentiments in India. Malaysia had referred to Kashmir as an “invaded and occupied” space. Pakistan is seen as a political enemy. And China, an economic rival.
In 2011, the RSS had said the government had “failed to check the influx of Chinese goods” into India and called for a public boycott. In 2014, it was reiterated. In 2016, there were multiple calls to boycott China over what was seen as its attempt to block India’s effort at JeM chief Masood Azhar being designated as a global terrorist. China is again the focus in 2020, starting with the Covid-19 outbreak and culminating in the Galwan Valley standoff.
