incredible tragedy. s tsunamis followed by earthquakes. lee cowen has just arrived there. what can you tell us about the situation so far? >> reporter: well, andrea, we just arrived here at the airport, at least, on samoa. it's still operational. but the areas outlying both the capital city here as well as in american samoa are where the real devastation is the worst. it's apparently, from what we understand, the south portion of the island, the southwest portions of both islands that got hit the hardest. there were several waves, from what we understand. at least three or four. a lot of the people that were killed, from what we're being told, after the first wave hit, people thought it was clear. they'd come down either to try to get fish that washed ashore or skav enj through debris. that's when the next wave hit. the death toll at at least 99 people. expected to go higher.
