STUFF A huge fountain erupted in Aro Valley sending torrents of water down Aro Street, as Wellington's pipe network's woes continue. OPINION: Half a lifetime ago I moved to Wellington. Entranced by the energy, I fell in love with the city. After 20 years of calling it home but watching the capital’s problems pile up, I’ve made the move to Dunedin. The reason my family moved was part pull, but also part push. Wellington’s not working. The council didn’t have to waste $12,000 on an international consultant to be told describing yourself as cool, wasn't cool and that the city was ”a bit aimless, looking for purpose”.There is a pervasive sense of malaise and a growing list of complaints – unaffordable housing, a broken water network, creaking public transport, a tired CBD and a nightlife quarter beset by violence and sexual assault. Add in a divided council with less than a third of residents satisfied with the way it makes decisions and you have capital problems.
