The increased security measures come after a crowd of Trump's supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6 in an attempt to interfere with Biden's confirmation hearings. Airmen from the 185th Air Refueling Wing based in Sioux City and the 132nd Wing in Des Moines, as well as soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division, based in Boone, will make their way to Washington D.C. for an estimated eight days, according to the release. The other National Guard members will be coming from 44 states, three territories and the District of Columbia. Soldiers and airmen will be tasked with "logistical support of military personnel" by the 185th air refueling wing and 132nd Wing and "support to civil authorities" by the 2nd infantry brigade combat team, according to the release. The National Guard members deployed will also aid the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Capitol Police and D.C. Metropolitan Police in traffic control, crowd management, logistics and communication, according to the release.
