Club historian Rob Mason pays tribute.
We were saddened to learn of the death of former Sunderland coach John Mortimore who has passed away at the age of 86.
Born in Farnborough, Mortimore was capped by England at youth and amateur level. He began with Woking (where his brother Charlie was the star centre forward) and also played for Aldershot as an amateur before 279 games over a decade as centre-half with Chelsea from 1956-65. The first of two appearances at Sunderland saw him play in the crucial game at the end of the 1962-63 season which led to Chelsea pipping Sunderland to promotion. He also won the League Cup playing in the final as Chelsea won the trophy in his final season.
