My eye was drawn to a headline in the local paper, “Elderly man knocked down by car”. Even by Aberdeen standards, it was a pretty slow news day, but what grabbed my attention was the fact that the “elderly” man was my junior by eight years. Why was it necessary to describe the unfortunate chap as elderly at all? If he’d been 20 years younger would the headline have been, “Middle aged man knocked down by car”? Club historian Rob Mason pays tribute. We were saddened to learn of the death of former Sunderland coach John Mortimore who has passed away at the age of 86. Born in Farnborough, Mortimore was capped by England at youth and amateur level. He began with Woking (where his brother Charlie was the star centre forward) and also played for Aldershot as an amateur before 279 games over a decade as centre-half with Chelsea from 1956-65. The first of two appearances at Sunderland saw him play in the crucial game at the end of the 1962-63 season which led to Chelsea pipping Sunderland to promotion. H...
