A judge will soon decide whether former Lakeland City Commissioner Michael Dunn faces a trial for fatally shooting a man at a store in 2018. Dunn appeared in court Friday for a hearing on his legal team’s claim that he acted properly under Florida’s “stand your ground” law and that a second-degree murder charge against him should be dismissed. If Circuit Court Judge Donald Jacobsen rejects the defense motion, Dunn will face a trial. The fatal shooting occurred Oct. 3, 2018, when Dunn was working at Vets Surplus, the Lakeland business where he worked as general manager. Christobal Lopez, a homeless man, entered the store, seized a hatchet that was for sale and hid it in his pants, according to reports from the Lakeland Police Department.
