It also limits our share of federal dollars. Political leaders across the state agreed there is much work to be done to change peoples mindset. In alameda county, community and elected leaders rallied today to dispel the myth caused by the proposed citizenship question. Sacramento has been busy spending money to urge people to be counted. In 2017, california spent 10 million. In 2018 90 million and another 87 million will be allocated pending the governors signature before midnight. Ill do the math for you. 187 million is being invested to make sure we get a complete count. Reporter the Supreme Court asked that the Trump Administration give a legal reason as to why it wants to add that question. The deadline for printing the census questionnaire and other forms is july 1st. Today the president said, i have asked if they can delay the census no matter how long until the United StatesSupreme Court is given Additional Information from which it can make a final and decisive decision on this very critical matter. And that would be a first, of course. It all started in 1709. And since then, the census has never been delayed. Also a first, the 2020 census will be available online. Now, i want to show you something, and you might be hard to see, but trust me, this is a page from the 1920 census. 100 years ago. My grandmother is on it. She was 30 years old at the time living in puerto rico, part of the United States. Everyone in her household was counted. So that was fun to find. Yeah, i bet that is. What a wonderful piece of history, Family History to have, lyanne. The governor talked about getting to work to ensure everyone is counted. How is that going to look exactly . Reporter besides the Public Service announcements, the governor said he knows of 13 communitybased organizations that are already mobilizing, and 50 50 counties are gathering volunteers. So lets take alameda county, for example, because i was there today. There are 20 subgroups in areas like housing, churches, medical groups that are working with the different communities. And a census issue was just one of three high profile cases that the Supreme Court ruled on today. Another big one concerned how political districts are drawn. In a 54 split, the justices ruled claims of partisan gerrymandering must be handled by voters and legislators, not federal judges. The decision is in response to challenges against both parties. Today on midday live we discuss it had with thomas wolf, counsel for the Democracy Program at the Brennan Center for justice, a nonpartisan but progressive organization. The ruling today on partisan gerrymandering were a loss for all voters. Our constitution tells us were supposed to have legislatures that are accountable to us and are representative of us. When one party can knock its power into a map for ten years and max out its seats, we dont have representation. And we cant vote these people out. We dont have accountability. Now the courts cleared the groundwork for members of either party if they control the process in the next decade to lock voters out of the process. Its time for voters to take this into their own hands and push for reform wherever thats possible. The third court ruling today getting a lot of attention concerning drawing blood. The court decided police may without a warrant order blood drawn from an unconscious person suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. This was the last day of the term for the Supreme Court. Now the justices are on summer recess. A vigil will be held at 8 00 tonight to honor the People Killed at Morgan Hill Ford on tuesday. Morgan hill is a community of 45,000 people. Close knit and extremely safe, says pastor kyle windsor with community christian. He organized a vigil taking place tonight to help his neighbors grieve. If we dont process this together as a community, we can take different paths. We can become indifferent, which is one of the worst things that could happen. We can become angry, which ive already seen that. Or we can begin to kind of be reflective and say, how do we make this place, my life, our family, et cetera, better as a result .
