It still remains a traffic jam. Were at greenbrae at sir Francis Drake and lacuesta. Its going to be a mess for a while. Live in greenbrae, wayne freedman, abc7 news. Thank you so much. Lets take another look at sky 7 over the scene here to hang on for just a moment. Were trying get back to that live picture. If not, well move on. You can see the car involved in the chase badly smashed up. Investigators trying to piece together exactly how the whole thing went down. This is a live picture from our sky 7 helicopter. And we will continue to monitor this story throughout the evening for you and bng you any new updates and developments as soon as we learn of them. Now, though, to our other top story, a woman is dead after being shot and killed in dublin. Her exboyfriend opened fire, he says in selfdefense after she and another man showed up at his door with a gun. Im ama daetz. And im dan ashley. Police just took down the crime scene outside the home on monihan street. Kate larsen is live in dublin. What do we know about this investigation . Well, that its very much ongoing, and police are still trying to figure out the motive for why this all happened. I can tell you that this is the first homicide in dublin since 2009. So perhaps needless to say, a very unusual crime that happened around 11 30 last night right here at this town house. Dublin police tell me that a woman, the exgirlfriend of the president and a man showed up knocking at the door. The resident, who neighbors tell me just moved in the past week woke up and looked out the window and saw his exgirlfriend. He opened the door for her, but then the man she was with kicked in the door and police say thats when she and the man started assaulting the resident who then pulled out a gun that he had on him and opened fire while he tried to escape from the house. Police believe the male suspect also fired shots. The exgirlfriend was shot and died at the scene. The man who she was with was also shot one time, not lifethreatening injuries and is currently detained in a hospital. Neighbors who have i spoken to tonight say they were very surprised this all happened. I only heard the police, an there was like 15 of them all with drawn weapons and a dog trying to get into the place, secure it. And i saw them carry the body of a body out. This is a very safe neighborhood. I live here. I work here. My child goes to school here. So for there to be a shooting here three houses down is very alarming. So police tell me that no charges are pending at this time against the resident, that he is okay, not physically injured, but understandably very shaken up. As far as the male suspect who is in the hospital, police are still investigating and trying to determine if they have enough evidence to actually arrest him since he is just detained at this point. This neighborhood i cant count how many kids ive seen out here this evening. A very friendly place. So everyone trying to understand how and why this happened with some of their new neighbors. Well have more at 11 00. For now live in dublin, im kate larsen, abc7 news. Kate, thank you. New developments in a new years eve tragedy. A man killed trying to stop thieves who stole his laptop. For the first time today, were hearing from his friends and family. Abc7 News ReporterMelanie Woodrow joins us live from oaklands montclair village with their words. Melanie . Ama, people who knew this young man are absolutely devastated. You can see that there are flowers that have been left here where he passed away. This was his 34th birthday, and it was just hours before he was getting ready to host a joint birthday new years eve celebration at his own apartment. Tonight we are honoring his familys wishes and not revealing his name. Postit notes filled with condolences and questions are stuck to the window of this montclair starbucks. Peter tseng cant believe his friend is gone. He was working on his laptop when someone stole it. Witnesses say one suspect snatched the laptop while another held the door open and a third drove the getaway car. The victim was dragged by the getaway car as he attempted to get his laptop back. I didnt think he was the type to do that. His cousin says he is a software engineer. She believes he either wanted to preserve all of his research or perhaps save the photos he was editing from their recent vacation together. I still cannot believe that this has happened. I do not want him to be remembered as a victim of a robbery because hes so much more than that. Hes a scholar. He constantly reads. His friends say he also loved hiking and was a talented photographer. Friends find out he died in the most heartwrenching way, arriving at his apartment for his joint Birthday Party new years eve celebration and getting a call for police as they waited outside his closed door. We were extremely shocked and in disbelief, i think. The victims parents are now coming from china and his cousin from new york to identify his body. The Oakland PoliceDepartment Says theyve made two arrests thanks in part to Montclair Village Associations Surveillance Video that captured the getaway vehicles license plate. Without the cameras that the Montclair Village Association installed, we may not have captured these criminals. Starbucks customer sue taylor was sitting next to the victim before he ran out. She later handed his cell phone to first responders. It was still warm from his hand. I mean, it was just seconds. He was there one second and the next minute he was really gone. And the woman who set up those postit notes says she didnt know the victim but she wanted to do something so that people could express how they were feeling. Meantime, the Alameda County dolphins says the Oakland Police department has not transferred the case to them as of yet. Live in montclair, Melanie Woodrow, abc7 news. Thank you. As we move on, take a live look at the Golden Gate Bridge, because it was drivers going through this toll plaza that led to a lawsuit against fastrak. A trial regarding that started today. The trial started in fact just as time was about to expire. 7 on your sides Michael Finney has been following this story. He is here to explain why fastrak is getting sued and why the case was almost thrown out. This class action claims that fastrak illegally charged toll evasion penalties to thousands of motorists after the Golden Gate Bridge switched to all electronic tolling. Fastrak denies those claims. The suit claims fastrak illegally penalized thousands of motorists who cross the Golden Gate Bridge without fastrak accounts. They were supposed to receive toll invoices in the mail, but the lawsuit claims many never got them and fastrak simply piled on penalties. Folks couldnt register their cars until they paid those penalties. So many spent thousands of dollars in seem cases. Fastrak, the Bay Area Toll Authority and the bridge district say they improved their policies for handling tolls and disputes, however, they want to keep the new policies a secret from you, from all of us, saying we might use information to, quote, game the system and evade tolls. The agency has also tried to ban the press and public from the courtroom during key testimony. Now abc7, 7 on your side objected, saying Government Policies are supposed to remain open to the public. The judge allowed information to remain under seal in court documents, but is keeping the trial open. At trial today, the Court Allowed limited questions just to meet the legal deadline to start the trial by tomorrow. Te case resumes in march when we may be able to hear what fastrak has been keeping under wraps. Ill let you know. We will of course be there. Its all been fascinating. It has been. Thanks, michael, very much. When it comes to your voice, your vote you have one fewer choice. Julian castro was the only latino candidate. 14 candidates have left the race. An equal number are still vying for the president ial nomination for now. Today Marianne Williamson laid off her Campaign Staff nationwide, but has so far made no announcement about leaving the race. Abc7 News ReporterLyanne Melendez joins us live from the newsroom with the consequences of castro stepping down. Lyanne . Well, the role model for many latinos is gone, for one. The person who pushed the other candidates to talk about immigration and illegal border crossings will no longer be heard during those future debates, but it could be that voters are more interested in supporting someone who can defeat President Trump than someone who looks like them. Julian castro was one of the first to throw his hat into the democratic president ial arena. I represent a new generation of leadership with a bold, ambitious plan for our United States to be the smartest, the healthiest, the fairest and the most prosperous nation on earth. During an abc7 news forum in november, we asked castro how he would deal with the family separation issue surrounding undocumented immigrants. By executive order. Find a way to protect our dreamers and also to protect their parents. But eventually it became apparent to many that castro was an unwinnable candidate and could not deliver the hispanic vote. Bernie sanders seen here campaigning at Fresno City College two months ago seemed more appealing to latinos. In fact, a poll commissioned by the Latino Community foundation in november found that 31 of latino voters in california supported sanders followed by joe biden and elizabeth warren, but only 9 were behind castro. Theyre choosy consumers about this. They want to get behind somebody who can win. Im fulfilling the legacy of barack obama and europe not. Many believe his confrontation with biden suggesting he was forgetting things cost castro some support. When you act like a bully or someone who is mean, then all youre doing is imitating the person youre trying to beat, mr. Trump. And that doesnt distinguish you in a positive way. It makes you a liability. Castro never apologized, instead saying i wouldnt do it differently. And castro said hell keep on working to make sure everyone in this country counts, everyone gets a good job, health care, and a decent place to live. Now can we say potential cabinet position . In the newsroom, Lyanne Melendez, abc7 news. And lyanne, can you talk a little bit about the silver line fog interest castro family with todays announcement . How did you guess . Now you know that Julian Castro has an identical twin who is a congressman. Joaquin castro, were going to show them there possibly with a beard well, he has a beard. He joked on live tv that julian made him grow the beard, there yo go, the one on the left is joaquin. Joaquin started growing it so he wouldnt be confused with his brother. So after revealing that to the entire world, Julian Castro did this. He tweeted if i knew it would look like this, i wouldnt have suggested it. Anyway. Wow. Wow, bro, ouch. I say shave the beard. No . What do you guys think. Its fine. Theyre brothers, thats fine. Definitely. Now we can confuse them. Thanks, lyanne. For the first time in almost a decade, more californians have moved out of the state than in. Thats according to the California Department of finance. In a new study by united van lines, the golden state ranked among the top ten of the most moved from states last year. New jersey was first, california ranked seventh. Now building a better bay area means making this place where people want to stay, right . But high housing costs, crime, and traffic are factors that we just cannot ignore. Abc7 news anchor dion lim has stories of people who made the move. Every time i come up here on the kgo roof, i look around and marvel at how beautiful the bay area is. Why would anyone ever want to leave . Apparently there are a lot of reasons. In a span of five years, 7200 californians have moved to boise, idaho. I spoke to two people who are native californians and they say the state has a lot more to offer than potatoes. The state motto means let it be perpetual in latin. Appropriate for the perpetual stream of californians flocking to the state. Including this former bay area resident. I remember there being a wave in the late 90s. And then around the time i moved here in the early 2000s. This wave feels more significant than it has previously. It seems like the state known for its spuds is now a hot potato. Forbes reports boise as the Fastest Growing metro area in the u. S. I grew up in southern california. I actually picked up and moved all the way to boise, idaho. And, you know, people asked me how it was, and i love it. Reporter kayla aveda moved to boise for her job at black box vr which is based in idaho. After moving back to start up San Franciscos location, she gets why so many people from the bay area want to relocate. The median price for a home in San Francisco, 1. 3 million. Now in boise, the median sales price, just 332,000. Thats about a Million Dollars less. Both kayla and michelle say idaho is contagious. Whatever the reason is that they move here. And then the family comes to visit, and then slowly you start to see the rest of that Family Moving up. I would take any chance to go back to boise just for a little bit. Back out here live there are lots of factors to consider when moving to idaho. But i posed the question on instagram just about 35 minutes ago. So far more than 500 of you have responded, and 45 of you say yes based off housing alone you would indeed consider making that kind of move. In San Francisco tonight, dion lim, abc7 news. Thank you, dion. Now to city of Mountain View, which has commissioned a 265,000 study to look into converting a small portion of its downtown into a pedestrian plaza. Abc7 News Reporter anser hassan joins us live on castro street, one consideration for the conversion, and what nearby Business Owners think about it. Hi, anser. Ama, good evening. This is the part of the street the city is considering converting to a pedestrian plaza. Its not just about making this area more pedestrian friendly. It also has to do with the train tracks and the train station behind me. Most people eating outside on castro street in Mountain View say it would be nice not to have traffic interfering with lunch. Getting cars off the road sounds like a great idea. The kids go play over there, scotter or skating, you know. While the family eats . Yes. The current proposal is to convert this section of castro street into a pedestrian plaza. But unlike cities where pedestrianfriendly streets are part of revitalization projects, Mountain Views move may be out of necessity. With the electrification of caltrans, cars wont be allowed to cross the street. Cars will have to be rerouted either creating an overpass or underpass which would cost up to 100 million. Open up more shores like shopping, it will be better. This way, just restaurants, its going to be bad. His turkish restaurant has been open for ten years. Like many Business Owners, he fears recruiting traffic could lead to a loss in foot traffic. Castro street has to be rerouted no matter what. And its kind of the best worst solution. Sarah owns a nightclub on opal street. She has similar concerns. She says the city has to do something to draw people to the area for this to work. We fear its going to be like california in palo alto which is a bus lane at the end. Once they closed it, it is now apartments. We hate to see castro street die like that. Now the city opens to have this plan back by the end of spring. They will then have three Public Meetings to solicit input. Reporting live, anser hassan, abc7 news. Thank you, anser. We want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. Share them by joining us on facebook. Now the Weather Forecast as we hit the weekend in this new year.
