And new video from the first hours of the emergency, you can see buildings and shrubs catching fire, sparks spreading the flames. Mauis famous front street reduced to embers and smoke. At sunup, we headed out by boat to see firsthand the staggering destruction of hawaiis onetime capital, lahaina. Its shoreline scorched. Dramatic new Drone Video Showing Hundreds of homes and businesses in ashes. Right now, we are in front of that famous front street here in lahaina, and you can just see it is completely destroyed. Home to so many historical landmarks, businesses, shops, restaurants. And of course, right there, is that 150yearold banyan tree, beloved by so many here. We walked through the streets witnessing apocalyptic scenes homes, apartments, restaurants, all leveled. So, weve made it to lahaina. This is as far as we can get, because they are still working on that Search And Rescue effort. But you can just see, these are homes. These were once amazing homes right here on the water, on front street, and theyre just gone. Anchor david ono of our los angeles station kabc on the ground here, too. Right here behind me is a classic lahaina neighborhood, and as you can see, the devastation is vast. Many, many homes on this one city block have gone up in flames. Reporter tonight, terrifying new video of the moments those flames overtook this town. People forced to drive through walls of fire and suffocating smoke. The harrowing escape. Boat crew member Dustin Johnson racing to warn others about the oncoming flames. If anybody is still out here, the fire is on front street and it is time to go reporter Shawn Dougherty and his girlfriend among those jumping into the ocean. At one point, it seemed like i might drown a little bit. I inhaled a lot of water. Reporter he says a First Responder told them to get out, the situation wasnt going to get better, but dougherty was now barefoot. I couldnt even make it across the street, because the pavement was so hot, and now i have seconddegree burns on the bottom of my feet. Reporter jumping back into the water and losing track of his girlfriend. Because it was so dark and so smoky, we lost each other. And i had no choice, i had to get back into the water. Reporter he is still trying to find her. Multiple fires are still burning on this island. Hawaii Air National Guard helicopters swooping in, joining the firefight. Important cultural and historic landmarks destroyed. The Historic Buildings that were there, the church, the prison, the mission house, all these Different Things are gone forever. They cant be replaced. They cant be rebuilt. Reporter its still not clear tonight how many people are missing, and how many have been injured. But one glimmer of hope. On wednesday we met steve scott, who got separated from his wife, patricia. Im trying to find my wife. I know shes safe. I think shes safe, but i havent found her yet. Reporter late word tonight, she is okay and they are now reunited. Linsey relieved to hear that. A heartwarming update amid so much loss. Gio joins us now live from maui. And gio, i know you have late news from the governor there. Whats he saying . Reporter well, linsey, we just learned that moments ago, the governor walked through lahaina, and he described it as total devastation. And as we saw for ourselves, it truly is. Linsey just so devastating. Gio, our thanks to you. Now to the mass exodus on maui. Thousands fleeing their homes, and a bottleneck at the airport, where tourists are waiting for a way to get out. Abcs Will Carr Reports on the islands resources stretched to the limit. Reporter tonight, as the fires continue to burn across maui, Chaotic Scenes at the islands main airport. They basically evacuated us from our hotel, they said, Everyone Needs to find a way to the airport. Reporter airlines say theyve flown more than 11,000 passengers and 400 crew members out of maui already. Hundreds more stranded, sleeping in xray machines, carts, anywhere they can. We met cindy blanco, from oregon, who has been sleeping on the Airport Floor with her kids since wednesday. Your airline said you cant get out until saturday . Whats your plan at this point . Oh, well, i started thinking about what to do, because its hard to camp at the airport with kids for two days, so i got us a rental car. Were going to sleep in the mini van for a couple of days. Okay, another bus is coming. Reporter overnight, this shelter taking in multiple nursing home residents evacuated by school bus. A lot of people coming right now from lahaina. They dont have anywhere to sleep, all the cots in there are taken already. Reporter an army of volunteers ferrying donated supplies to stranded families. For people on the mainland who dont have an understanding as to just how bad it is, how would you describe it . Its devastating. Yeah. Its devastating. Reporter back at the airport thank you very much. Reporter volunteers handing out meals. This is just what we do for each other, you know . Were all family here, and reporter is it that aloha spirit . Yeah, like, aloha is love, and, like, these people lost their homes, and maybe some of these folks also, like, lost their perfect vacation here at the airport today, i dont know, but to lose everything, like its devastating. Reporter linsey, this airport is jam packed, and there are no rooms left on this island. So, some of these passengers could find themselves sleeping at the airport through the weekend. They are keeping a good perspective on it, though, saying their hearts go out to the people who lost everything on this island. Linsey . Linsey that idea that alloh is love really resonating tonight, will, thank you. Mauis lahaina area has been a magnet for artists, and front street was home to two dozen art galleries. One new gallery was set to open today. Now its owner has lost his business and is living in a uhaul. Heres reporter jeremy lee from on honolulu station, kitv. Reporter tonight, so many lives and livelihoods shattered. With nowhere to go, ruby mazur is living out of this uhaul with his sons. He had just moved his art gallery from Oahu To Lahaina and was getting ready to open his doors today. We found this amazing location on front street. They came in the day before the fire, wanting to buy art, and they said, well, come back tomorrow, because well be officially open. Tomorrow never came. Reporter his new gallery was destroyed when flames ripped down front street. Its over. Its gone. Its completely gone. Its a war zone. Reporter lahaina was a mecca for artists and art lovers. Front street, home to about two dozen art galleries. It hurts, man. Its a lifetime of work. Gone. Reporter like so many who have been displaced here on maui, lost their homes, lost their businesses, ruby mazur says its about mustering the strength to go forward. Linsey . Linsey jeremy, thank you. Now, to malika dudley, a meteorologist at our honolulu station kitv, who is monitoring the wildfires and the weather driving them. Malika, whats the latest . Reporter linsey, there are still several active fires here on maui. You can see them here on the map. The winds are starting to die down, but remain gusty in spots. But we have seen some rainshowers, though largely not in the areas we need it most. We still have Drought Conditions across hawaii, and the worst of it is right here in maui. Were facing moderate to severe drought. Unfortunately, this is our dry season, so while any rain helps, we are running at a deficit, and dry brush is fuel for these fires to continue to spread. Were also moving into the peak of hurricane season. Dora, which passed well south of here, but was the cause of our high winds, is moving away, and more typical tradewind weather is beginning to fill in. Linsey . Linsey so many there wishing for rain. Malika, thank you. President biden has quickly approved a Disaster Declaration for hawaii during his remarks in Salt Lake City today. He took a moment to address the devastating fires. Were working as quickly as possible to fight these fires and evacuate residents and tourists. In the meantime, our prayers are with the people of hawaii, but not just our prayers, every asset we have will be available to them. Theyve seen their homes, their businesses destroyed, and some have lost loved ones. And its not over yet. Linsey abcs chief White House Correspondent mary bruce has been monitoring the federal response, and mary, what do we know about the assets being deployed . Reporter well, linsey, by ordering all federal Assets Available on the island, it means tonight the coast guard, army, and navy are all now assisting and coordinating with local Emergency Response groups. The hawaii National Guard also now activating over 130 guardsmen. The administration is also deploying chinook and black hawk helicopters, among others, to help with the fire fighting, and fema is surging resources and personnel to the island to help those who may be in need, those survivors, to access federal assistance.
