New developments this morning and the replacement for the late california senator dianne feinstein. Governor newsom was facing pressure for months to pick a possible replacement. But ever since the late senator ran into failing health, she died last week at the age of 90. Governor newsom is appointing Democratic Party strategist Laphonza Butler to serve out the remainder of senator feinsteins term until the 2024 election. Butler is the current leader of the Political Action committee emilys list. That Group SupportsDemocratic Women candidates who favor abortion rights, notably, she served as an advisor to the Kamala Harris 2020 president ial campaign. Butler will be the only black woman to serve in the senate and the first openly lgbtq person to represent california in that chamber. Governor newsom says butler will move from maryland back here to california and reregister to vote before shes sworn in on wednesday. Meanwhile the officer of senator feinstein is releasing plans for her funeral arrangements this week. Feinstein will lie in state for public viewing at San Francisco city hall on wednesday from 9 a. M. To 7 p. M. A private Funeral Service is scheduled for thursday at the war memorial theater that will be broadcast to the public at city hall. Feinstein then took her final journey back home to San Francisco on saturday. Her body, accompanied by her daughter, catherine, and former House Speaker nancy pelosi. People are out paying their respects all along the way. She got everything together. It was a beautiful city. Its still a beautiful city. But she was very well known and she took care of San Francisco. She led during a dark time in the city and brought a beacon of light and hope to us. And she will be sorely missed at that was what we heard all throughout San Francisco that senator feinstein loved the city and fought for it. A book of condolences will be available for you to sign at city hall through wednesday. Many were calling for Governor Newsom to tap longtime bay area representative barbara lee to fill that seat. She tweeted in part saying, i quote , wish laphonza be well and look forward to working closely with her to deliver for the golden state. California deserves an experienced senator who will deliver on progressive priorities. Thats exactly what i am running to do. And then theres this statement from the current california senator welcoming butler as his new colleague, alex padilla, saying in part, quote, throughout her career, Laphonza Butler has been a strong voice for working families, lgbtq rights and a champion for increasing womens representation in politics. We used to always say, if dianne and i ran against each other, my daughter nancy would probably vote for dianne. That was the love that existed. But love is a good word for her because she loved people. She loved california. She loved america. And to bring her home in the grand way that we did this new federal funding deal keeps the government running for another 45 days. Well, the deal may have gotten done, but it might cost House SpeakerKevin Mccarthy his job. Florida House Republican matt gaetz is threatening to introduce a motion that would allow house members to eject mccarthy from the speakership with a majority vote. Gates does not happy with mccarthy for brokering a deal with democrats and, quote, not reining in spending. Its unclear if that motion would have enough support to remove mccarthy, but some democrats said they are in favor of it as well. The plan includes 16 billion in disaster aid relief and forgoes funding for ukraine a nonstarter for many House Republicans who instead want to boost Border Security spending. Republican Lindsey Graham â– sayig senators are working on legislation to fund both priorities to the republicans who say ukraine doesnt matter to us, youre wrong. Respectfully, lee, youre wrong. The war gets bigger, not smaller. New york House DemocratJamaal Bowman is fighting republican accusations that he was obstructing the houses work after setting off a fire alarm on saturday. Bowman is calling it a, quote, innocent mistake, saying he was rushing to make a vote and didnt know it would activate the whole building. Well we do have a very special Vantage Point right now to kick off fleet week. We are on the flight deck of a ship that just arrived here from san diego yesterday. And im joined now with a representative from the navy this is Lieutenant Commander chloe morgan. And we appreciate you being awake early for us, chloe, this morning. Tell us a little bit about the ship that we are on. I know we saw a view from below in our last live shot. Tell us about this boat. Yeah. So this is the uss john p murtha. The ships had a very busy year. So in june, they came back from a seven month deployment in the indopacific. This summer they were working with nasa, actually working on orion recovery procedures and the most recently, they were all the way up north in the bering sea working with the navy seals. So the ships done a lot of missions. But the most exciting mission yet, maybe the most fun will be San Francisco fleet week. So were very excited to be here. And so how can people here in San Francisco sort of get involved and maybe even come see this ship for themselves . Absolutely. So well start having public ship tours here at pier 30, 32 on wednesday. So i invite everyone to come out here, interact with our sailors. But even more so, were going to have sailors and marines on liberty all throughout the city. Were going to have bands do performances. So theres a lot of great opportunities for the citizens of San Francisco to meet their military. Perfect. And i know you were just showing me some of the numbers here that this is a ship that can fit between 300 to 350 navy sailors. Is that correct . Absolutely. And then what makes it so amazing is its an amphibious ship. So we actually bring marines, part of a Marine Expeditionary unit on board during a deployment. In fact, behind us right there, we have a marine helicopter. Were on a large flight deck that can fit multiple aircraft. And then even below us, theres a well deck. So marines are very well suited to this kind of ship. And we Work Together as a blue green team. And what are you looking forward to most about fleet week this year . I think its just honestly interacting with everybody. You know, its a beautiful time. Theres no better time than fall in San Francisco.
