Those stories plus outrage. What do we want, justice, when do we want it now. A Texas Community furious after a woman is shot dead by police in her own home. Hitting snooze, why Later School Start times may be heading your way. And simply the best, simone biles shatters the record books becoming the most decorated gymnast in World Championship history. Inside her impressive golden hall, today, monday, october 14th, 2019. From nbc news, this is today with Savannah Guthrie and hoda kotb, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Good morning, everybody. Welcome to today, nice to have you with us on a monday morning, and we start with this breaking news overseas, the u. S. Getting out of syria fast while turkeys military offensive now enters day six. This morning we are learning the turks are being helped by former members of isis and al qaeda. Well start with nbcs chief correspondent richard engel. He joins us from northern syria. Richard, good morning. Reporter this is a Major Development with u. S. Troops ordered to leave and the kurds under attack from turkey and these radical militias, the kurds are now turning to others for help. New images this morning of u. S. Allies, the kurds of syria, celebrating the arrival of their old adversary, they had no other choice, just hours earlier, the Trump Administration announced that nearly all of the remaining 1,000 u. S. Troops in syria will be leaving soon. Leaving the kurds armed with only light and medium weapons, effectively defenseless. Defense secretary mark esper making the announcement. I spoke with the president last night, after discussions with the rest of the National Security team and he directed that we begin a deliberate withdrawal of forces from northern syria. President trump appearing to wash his hands of the kurds and this war tweeting the kurds and turkey have been fighting for years. Others may want to come in and fight for one side or the other. Let them. It couldnt have come at a worse time. The kurds who fought with u. S. Forces against isis for four years are also under attack by Turkish Backed militias. Militias accused of atrocities, u. S. Officials tell nbc news, the militias include former members of isis and al qaeda. While it may seem unbelievable, it appears turkey, a nato country used alleged terrorists as shock troops against u. S. Ally, the kurds, until they collapsed and had to call on president assad to be their savior, and amid this chaos, isis is trying to regroup. Hundreds of isis members and supporters have broken free of detention camps. At a prison we visited with 5,000 isis detainees, the warden told us there are attempted breakouts now every day. And now the syrian army is making further advances putting more pressure on u. S. Troops here to leave. U. S. Forces say they will make a deliberate withdrawal and make sure that they can defend themselves at all times. Richard engel in syria for us. Thank you, for more on whats happening and what may happen next were joined by security analyst jeremy bash at the cia and defense of defense as chief of staff. This decision to pull nearly all u. S. Troops out of syria, was this part of the original plan or did things just spin out of control and now this is where we are. From the moment President Trump hung up the phone with president erdogan of turkey last sunday it was clear turkish troops were going to come across the border and it was going to be untenable for forces to leave their forces there. They do not like to be forced to retreat, forced to withdraw amid chaos and under fire. Its not an ideal situation. Its dangerous for our troops, and creates a vacuum for northern syria. Youre talking about the danger to our troops. There are reports that some u. S. Troops were fired upon or fired in the general direction of u. S. Troops. What happened there, turkeys supposed to be our ally. Weve got two problems, savannah, one is that Turkish Military apparently launched an artillery strike near a u. S. Military base. This was after the United States military gave turkey exactly where our position was. They should have known better. Also turkish troops are using local arab militias including isis terrorists militias to attack kurds, american allies, troops could get caught in the crossfire. They say roughly 10,000 to 11,000 prisoners who had been detained in northern syria. Whats the status of those prisoners, how do you see this playing out. American military forces had made plans to take about 60 high level terrorists out of the country. They had to be left behind because the american troops had to leave so quickly and in addition to those 60, there are about 9,000 more detainees, isis terrorist fighters. If isis is able to get out of prison and regroup, not only will they launch terrorists across that particular area. Nt forget in 2015 an isis affiliate took down a russian airliner, killing 240 in that attack, and also isis followers in europe, in the United States, also conducted terrorist attacks in 2015 and 2016. The orlando nightclub shooter in 2016 was an isis follower. He killed 50 people in that attack. Very quickly, the president is now talking about sanctions potentially against turkey. I mean, could that be effective here or is it too little, too late. Its way too late. Not only will sanctions not come but they will not stop turkish troops from doing what president erdogan was planning for a long time. Jeremy bash, thank you so much. It is shaping to be another busy week when it comes to the impeachment investigation. New testimony expected on capitol hill, including from a key figure in the ukraine story. The person who may have been right there at the beginning. Nbcs chief White House CorrespondentHallie Jackson has the latest on this, good morning. Reporter good morning, this week ahead may get even busier since we could hear as early as today about new interviews in the impeachment investigation. Lawmakers hoping to waste no time bringing in high profile, former and Current Administration officials. Congress back in town and back to work this morning with key testimony expected today from fiona hill, a former top adviser on russia and ukraine, expected to say Rudy Giuliani sidestepped official channels to try to dig up dirt on the bidens in ukraine. Later in the week another diplomat in the spotlight, gordon sondland, the ambassador to the european union. Lawmakers want to know more about his involvement with ukraine, especially considering that country is not even in the eu. Do you understand why the ambassador to eu was the point person to ukraine. I dont. You havent gotten an answer to that question . No, it doesnt make sense. Obviously he shouldnt be. Sondland is the one time trump donor who defended the president when a state Department Staffer wrote its crazy to withhold Security Assistance with a political campaign. Sondland responding the president has been crystal clear, no quid pro quos at any time, adding i suggest we stop the back and forth by text. Nbc news has learned sondland plans to Tell Congress he does not know why u. S. Military assistance to ukraine was held up nor who ordered it. Thats all but certain to raise questions whether the president was telling the truth whether he denied dangling military aid for a political favor. The president keeping up his unsubstantiated attacks on joe biden and his son hunter. He flies into china and he takes out 1. 5 billion. The former Vice President s son speaking out for the first time in a new statement through his lawyer saying despite no evidence of wrongdoing, he will step down from the board of a Chinese Investment company by the end of the month. A move seemingly intended to rob the president of a key talking point. No one, no one has asserted my son did a single thing wrong. No one has asserted i have done any wrong except the lying president. Hunter bidens Attorney Says he will agree not to serve on boards of or work on behalf of Foreign Owned Companies if his father does win the white house. Theres a video that started circulating last night played at one of the president s resorts last week. What can you tell us about this. Thivideo shows a picture of President Trumps face superimposed over a violent killer, massacring his critics, members of the news media in the church of news. The New York Times which reported this meme video was shown at a pro trump conference says it looks like an edited scene from kings men, the White House Press senlgt secretary is defeating that the president has not yet seen the video but will do so shortly and he strongly condemns the video from everything he has heard. Hallie jackson at the white house. Thank you. Big story in new orleans over the weekend. Hoda, savannah, two people killed, another person still missing after the Hard Rock Hotel which is being built near the historic French Quarter suddenly collapsed. You can see it right there. This morning, officials worry that another collapse is possible. Nbcs Morgan Chesky is at the scene this morning. Morgan, good morning to you. Reporter yeah, craig, good morning, and thats what makes the situation so incredibly dangerous is the fact that this building could still collapse at any moment in time, and thats making for one agonizing wait game for the family of the man still trapped inside there that today workers are trying to desperately bring out alive. This morning, the race is on to find a worker still buried somewhere in this massive pile of debris. Officials hoping to find him alive. Say they remain in rescue mode. We have someone we have not located. And cant get to where we think they might be. Reporter rescue efforts painstaking and delicate, much of the pancaked building far too unstable to search. Its happening as fast as can possibly happen with safety in mind. Oh, my god. Reporter on saturday, the Hard Rock Hotel under construction in downtown new orleans came crashing down. There are reports of someone possibly trapped in the building. Reporter more than a hundred workers forced to run for their lives when the top floor suddenly gave way, crashing on to the streets below. Phillip was in the hotel across the street when he heard and felt the rumble. It kept getting louder and louder and the ground started to rumble as well. Reporter the ground shook . Yes, it did. Reporter at least two people were killed, 30 others injured. Family members Holding Vigil as officials deploy drones to scour the upper floors where its too dangerous to send search dogs and rescue teams. Late sunday officials removed one body from the construction site, the cause of the collapse still under the investigation. The Hard Rock Hotel said they had no involvement in the construction of the project. The biggest threat remains one of the two cranes leaning atop the building, its only support, debris, which could give away at any moment. If that crane were to start moving, it would take down pretty obvious it would take down more of the building. Reporter crews will be going back into the building to resume searches. Officials have brought in a crane they hope will stabilize the building to help them reach the harder to reach areas that are too unstable. Morgan chesky in new orleans, thank you.
