Pretty usual along westbound 580 heading through the altamont pass. 205 to 680 about 22 minutes. Were also tracking an accident along 84 right near Little Valley road. The eastbound direction currently blocked. This is involving a big rig that hit a pole there. So it looks like they are waiting for crews to come and remove that pole and its pretty badly damaged. So it could be a while before they clear it. That big rig is on its side. This next story might make you think about bringing your computer to a store. Laptop thefts are skyrocketing in berkeley. The bad guys are getting bolder. Joe vazquez reports. Reporter peets coffee on shattuck avenue last friday. Three people walked in and lurched toward two different customers stealing two laptops simultaneously and running out. You probably saw the one in the foreground the guy in the black hoodie easily gets the laptop and runs out. Reporter heres the other one. Watch the guy in the pink hoodie. Thats the laptop on the counter, boom, he grabs it and sprints away. We noticed this to be an increasing phenomenon. Reporter detective Sergeant Frank says this video is an example of how fast it can happen. He says small groups of robbers have been targeting berkeley in recent months. If you were to sit at a table with a pile of clash in a clear plastic bag that someone could see, you would probably be more cognizant of who is around you before you let that go. Its not just the pile of cash. Its someones college papers, dissertation, family photos. Reporter police say there were a total of 57 laptop thefts in berkeley all of last year. This year, there have been 21. 16 in january, 5 in february so far. Four of those thefts happened at cafe strad da across the street from ucberkeley where at least one student told me she is trying to be more careful. I make sure that im looking around and making sure that im safe. Reporter police say some victims have gotten hurt chasing after the robbers. Remember this guy from peets . The victim chased behind and ended up catching the getaway car. But watch what happens. He ends up hanging on and then getting dragged down the street. The victim had minor injuries. Hail piled up on cars in vallejo and on the ground. And lots of snow in the sierra. Overnight levels as low as 1500 feet. Its scary. Makes you want to take a vacation. It snowed all night. They had thundersnow yesterday so it was an action packed day and they saw snow levels in placerville so in the foothills. It was cool to see. Also for our area, im sure people got hit by scattered showers in the afternoon. I was going on a jog at the embarcadero and yes, they arrived. Just as we forecast, i should have known. When the Florida Shooter opened fire last week, the School Resource officer had a gun but he never went in the building. That resource officer Scott Peterson has resigned. The sheriff says he was sickened to see Surveillance Video that shows peterson stayed outside while students were being gunned down inside Marjory Stoneman douglas high school. What i saw was a deputy arrive at the west side of the building 12, take up a position and he never went in. So what should he have done . Went in, addressed the killer, killed the killer. 19yearold nikolas cruz is accused of opening fire on the School Campus february 14th. He is charged with 17 counts of murder for the deaths of these 14 students and three staff members. Two other sheriffs deputies have been placed on administrative leave while the Department Investigates nearly 2 dozen encounters with the suspected shooter. President trump is proposing bonuses for teachers who carry guns in schools. These would be people that actually would want them and it would be a small percentage but it would be a lot of people. And once you do this, you will have a situation where all of a sudden, this horrible plague will stop. The National Education association responded with this statement Arming Teachers does nothing to prevent that. At least 4 states are now considering legislation to allow educators to carry concealed firearms in schools. 8 states already do. One california lawmaker has introduced a bill to require School Districts to have at least one Armed Security guard. They are considering legislation to allow legislators allow teachers to carry firearms in schools. Eight states already do. One requires School Districts to have one Armed Security guard. Investigators believe a potent drug is responsible for the deaths of three men found on a bay area sidewalk. Plus, a california state senator resigning amid multiple accusations of Sexual Misconduct. Reporter a San Francisco Public Health officer says that in more than 20 years, he has not seen this instance of three people dying at the same time in this fashion and although the exact cause of death isnt yet known, Health Officials suspect fentanyl is to blame. Three men died on the sidewalk outside haightashburys urban school. Officials say the deaths are not related to the school or the cold weather and no foul play is suspected. But fentanyl poisoning is on the rise in San Francisco. Its very easy to overdose with fentanyl. Its more than 100 times more potent than morphine. And so you can literally die within minutes. Thats how powerful it is. Reporter Health Officials say investigators found Drug Paraphernalia at the scene suggesting that the men were using methamphetamine or crack cocaine. Fentanyl is an opioid. Its often intentionally laced with other drugs to make counterfeit products or accidentally mixed in with other drugs because fentanyl is made in a lab. It can be found in many forms and expert say theres no way to tell its presence just by looking at the drug. The bottom line is that its dangerous. If you buy something on the street, you have no idea what youre consuming. Reporter the Health Department says the best Safety Measures are for drug users to always carry narcan, a nasal spray that can reverse overdoses. Try a test dose first. Dont do drugs alone and test for fentanyl with test strips like this one available at the citys syringe access sites. I see people freaking out quite a bit. I work downtown and ill see people shooting up heroin on a regular basis. Reporter this person moved to San Francisco a few months ago from new york city. Its disheartening but not surprising especially with the opiate crisis going on. Just in general in the United States nowadays, its people dont know what they are getting. Reporter the city has seen a number of fentanyl Overdose Deaths double in two years. There were 22 deaths in 2016 up from 11 a year before. Health officials stress that narcan really is the best way to save lives. Its covered by most health plans and available at pharmacies and in some cases, without a prescription. State senator tony mendoza a democrat from artesia resigned yesterday before his colleagues could decide his fate. Mendoza accused of making unwanted advances toward six women including some subordinates. We have the really strong gusty conditions throughout the day yesterday. Gusty winds in the area. This morning well continue to see that strong wind especially for the coast and the north bay and its going to continue probably for the next couple of hours and then things should calm down especially along the east bay. The south bay staying calm as well throughout the day. Then tomorrow, sunday, its looking like a mostly sunny pretty calm kind of weekend. So satelliteradar showing we had some cloud coverage coming in and all of that is breaking apart and moving on and, yes, no more trickles of rain out of that system. Its all now moved towards nevada. Thats where the system is that brought us scattered showers yesterday and the sierra snowfall. Its over. Its heading to nevada and utah. What we are going to see today, cold clear skies out there. Then another system up to the north. So the one in British Columbia will impact us on monday. Well get another chance of rain next week and that one could bring a little bit more moisture with it. We could see a little decent amount of rainfall by the end of next week. Our futurecast showing no clouds today. A few areas of cloud coverage tomorrow morning. We may wake up to some gray skies. But its not going to dampen our weekend, right . High temperatures today warmer than yesterday, upper 50s closer to the average and then lake tahoe got fresh powder about 10 inches to a foot for some locations. They are working on clearing that scene but its going to be a while. The eastbound lanes currently blocked. Traffic is able to get by using the lefthand turn lane so you will be able to get through that stretch. Its going to be slow through the area. Westbound direction not seeing impact. Overnight roadwork will have all that wrapped up in the next 15 minutes along highway 13 between moraga and broadway terrace a detour set up for you and its not causing any slowdowns at this point.
