Give me one month. Ill do something that symbolizes freedom. Think you cant . Weve got a bay area swimmer defying age and the odds, saying you can. Halfwaythrough the workweek, bay area, lets go. See you my friend. Im reed cowan. Were glad you are here. Yes we are, im gianna franco. I need that motivation right there jumping into the bay. Wow. Cold water plunge and good for him showing us we can all do it and i felt like the weather this morning and this was just me, that armchair expert was a little better this morning than yesterday morning. Lets talk to jess about that. Actually darren. Jess is off this morning. Darren is gracing us with his presence. Hi darren peck. Good morning. Hey guys, were going to call jess at home. Thats what i meant. Wake her up. Good morning jess. Well, when im over here in the virtual set. So we havent had a chance yet to see each other. For the morning yet. But yeah, the weather is starting to change and were starting to get back into a little bit more of that fall pattern. And there is a trend in the temperatures this morning that is starting to look very fall and ill show you what i mean in one second. Its not here, san jose, thats a live look over downtown. Lets take a look at what some of the numbers have to say in terms of the way it feels out there right now. South bay numbers and theres a lot of mid 50s down here for the santa clara valley. Trivalley. Its 55 in livermore. The number along the coast for halfmoon bay is not all that different. Were looking at temperatures there that are struggling to get to around 60 and inland Contra Costa County relatively warm out there. Take a look at the numbers around 6. A taste of fall is in the north bay. Where its as much as ten degrees cooler right now this is a pattern were going to watch play out over and over again. Over the next several months as we go into winter. You are going to be noticeably colder up there and at 50 degrees its ten degrees cooler in santa rosa than it is for just about most other places. All right, there is a change coming for the weekend. And its going to be a little bit cooler. And believe it or not, there is a chance for some very light rain. By the time we get to saturday. Were going to play the futurecast forward when we go to the complete forecast when icome back and check in with you guys again in a few minutes and ill show what you the system looks like. Its a good news story because at least its not offshore winds and theres a small chance of light rain. Gianna . Looks pretty good so far. Now is the time to do it. Why . Because look at this. Not a lot of cars out there. Not a bad ride heading into the city right now. Live look here at the bay bridge. And cruising along just fine with no delays or issues this morning. In fact, most of the bay area is showing a lot of green and when i say that, that means good. A lot of freeways are up to speed and nice conditions and a little slow westbound 580, 237 there. That Castro Valley y connector working your way over to 880. Likely due to some construction or trouble spot there. And weve got a closure happening this weekend on 101. Ill have that coming up in my next report. Weve got some breaking news out of korea this morning. That country expelling a u. S. Army private who crossed the border sfo north korea. You might remember back in July Travis King crossed the border with north and south at the demilitarized zone. At the time north korea said king sought refuge from the United States. So big question this morning. Why did they expel him . Whens he going to leave north korea and whats going to happen to him when he comes back to the United States . Were still asking those questions. Well, during hispanic heritage month, were checking in on the health of latino owned businesses. Latino entrepreneurs continue to start businesses faster than any other group. And according to a report from stanford, Latino Business owners are growing by 44 in just the past decade and yet they still face many challenges especially as one of largest underbanked groups in the country. Thats according to the fdic. Shawn chitnis is live in san jose this morning with more on the Impact Community help can have on a Small Business when they need it the most. Good morning, shawn. Reporter gianna, good morning. And no better example of the spirit of entrepreneurship than where we are. This is one of the businesses districts throughout the bay area here in san jose where you can see a collection of latino restaurants and shops here that celebrate exactly what were talking about. But there are still some challenges despite the growth that you mentioned. When we talk about the issues related to banking, were referring to specifically just having a short Credit History as well as not having all the documentation or knowledge of the Financial System that is holding back more businesses from enjoying that growth. So when we have the chance to speak to someone who has seen success, they wanted to be an example to emphasize how theres still a need for ongoing support and resources. Alicia has never forgotten about the journey she went on to get to this kitchen. Originally from mexico, she came to the u. S. In 2000. Eager for the opportunities it presented her. We come to this country because like as immigrant because we are looking for a better life for in a good education for our kids. Reporter working two jobs with a family, she started making tamales at home. Silk them on the street and by knocking on doors. She knew she had Something Special but needed help to make it a success. Everybody has a dream. And in business and everything, so just work hard and find the resources and its going to come through. For sure. Reporter axon Opportunity Fund gave alicia a crucial first loan to start deliveries while coaching her along the way. Frequently she was shut out of the traditional Financial System and she was not able to access the capital she needed in order to grow her business. Reporter but alicia says passion and perseverance carried her to new milestones. To work hard and deliver and all they need is a little bit of help from those of us who are here to help them. Reporter order after order confirms that her approach is working. Which includes the most important ingredient of all, lots of love. I say to my ladies that when they are cooking or preparing or assembly, everything, do like you are doing for your family. Reporter the path requires a lot of sacrifice. Which she never forgets. And makes every moment she spends at her Business Today all the more satisfying. Always i say, i pinch myself to see like if this is true. And its true. Reporter and that pinch me moment is really 20 years in the making. Just a year after she came to the u. S. In 2001 she started making the tamales. In 2010 she started getting the training and opened the business in 2015. A lot of work to get to today and initially only had six employees and now she has 60 employees and that space that we saw in hayward, its a 6,000 square foot facility. Postpandemic there are still challenges and she was able to rely heavily on catering in the past not really looking to contracts that she gets with School Districts as well as major businesses. Guys, back to you. Shawn thank you. What a great story and i mean, great to get a perspective of someone who came here and through the course of what 20 years . Has really grown and thrived in their business. Six to 60 employees so shes also giving other people an opportunity. Right and its a corporate and banking success story. Right . And these banks can see like this works. When we invest and put our money into family and innovations and it works. Good for them and good for anybody who gets to torque for her. I would love for her to be my boss. Time now 5 08 in the morning. Hollywood headlines, herald an end to the Writers Strike. Writers are writing but wheres the actors . An update on part two in tinseltown. Plus its crazy, i just saw is a kid yesterday. I asked him how long hes been here, he said three days. Were there as your community station. But before that, all parties agreed they can go back to work. Likely see the favorite late night talk shows back in production first. This is just one part of the hollywood strike story though. Actors are still on strike with no confirmed negotiations on that front yet in sight. Meanwhile, President Biden is waking up in the bay area this morning. Hes in town campaigning for cash. This morning, he will meet with his tech council and Administration Officials say hes expected to preview a new Artificial Intelligence executive order. It will reportedly seize the opportunities and manage the risks posted by ai. Later, hell attend two campaign receptions. Last night, billionaire couple mark highsing and liz simons hosted fundraiser for him in atherton. This playing out while countdown to shutdown happens. Democrats and republicans have until the end of the week to get it together before a Government Shutdown risks the paychecks of thousands of federal workers. Government Services Like wic and head start along with many others could also see service interruptions. Hard line conservatives headtohead with their own leader californias Kevin Mccarthy saying if they dont get the deep spending cuts they want, theyll let the Government Shutdown. Reed, the issue of how to handle the homeless cry in addition San Francisco is so contentious. Two people went headtohead on the stage last night. The contenders, a local Business Owner and a prominent advocate who usually exchanged blows online rather than inperson. The one thing they have in common, both have taken a lot of heat for their opinions. Betty yu was there as this Important Community discussion took place in front of a packed house at mannys. Were not going to hiss. Were not going to boo. Were not going to clap. Reporter before a full house at mannys. Deli board owner manny says he became an expert on homelessness through personal experience. I have found two dead bodies, one in 2023, one in 2019. Both walking my dog outside of my home. If you have seen the conditions on 7th and mission, and you can look at me and honestly tell me that thats humane, then i will give up. Reporter adam approached jennifer freedom jr. Back, executive director on the coalition of homelessness for a public debate. The group is suing the city arguing it violated the law byclearing homelessness enamounts before clearing the smelter. Vs. A temporary limit. What we have to do to have a functioning homeless system. One of the first things we have to do is we have to prevent people from becoming homeless in the first place. Last year in San Francisco, for every one person, you know, that we got off, we had five more people becoming homeless. Reporter adam believes the city needs a tougher, more aggressive approach to handling open air drug use. Mental illness, and homelessness. We need medical professionals to actually screen these people and figure out what their real needs are. How in the world do you ask a fentanyl addict whos in a tent high, if they want services . You have to give these people a time to decompress a little bit. Give them an opportunity to take a shower. So what does that look like . Does that look like give them hope. Reporter owner manny gave jennifer an opportunity to respond to why she called adam who often posts grim Street Scenes toxic. I think the quote was i think hes well intentioned but his messaging is often toxic. The reason i said that also you accused me of murder and you have done it like lot of other stuff on social media that goes after med. Then you can respond to her. Just let her finish. You know, that so but that that aside, i think that what is happening in a lot of the debate is that were dehumanizing folks. Reporter adam says the city needs to do more to make San Francisco less attractive. Its crazy. I just saw a kid yesterday, i asked him how long hes been here, he said three days. He came from new hampshire. Coming here is the cheapest fentanyl on the planet. Its the easiest place to sustain on the bottom with zero consequences. Reporter jennifer said the city needs to appropriately match people with the right services. Pushing people from block to block doesnt really thats where we have been doing. You give someone a citation or you give them arrest, theyre back in the same situation, theyre worse off. Reporter though they differ on how to best uphold it, both agreed the dignity of the people on the street are important. Lets give them a round of applause, both of them. Yeah, kudos for how manny handle that conversation. So easy in the divisive issues to see people yell at each other and im sure there was a little bit of that last night but by and large, it looked like it was a test of ideas and not people. Thats what i want to see in the debates going into the president ial election. Because we know those can get very heated and i really applaud them how well they handled that being on completely two different sides and opinions. But i also appreciate that this is a community having these type of conversations. And trying to get that message out there to see change. So kudos to them for that as well. Its time. All right, lets talk to my friend darren about the weather. Good morning darren and welcome. Thank you. Its nice to be here, guys. Weve gone through a transition in the seasons. Reed you mentioned how different it felt a moment ago. And there is a very important difference. Were not dealing with any fog. Theres no marine layer out there. We didnt wake up to any of that. Its kind of like this is how the season transitions and you know, if you dont stop and really point it out, maybe you can miss it. Thats the view from the top of the Salesforce Tower looking out towards the west. We usually see plenty of clouds over the hills on the west side of the city. Were not seeing any. And one way we can also verify this, is to use the Virtual Reality map to put the readings on here for visibility. So the numbers on here are telling you how far down the road you can see. Most of these are 9 or 10. Except for one of them. The one out here. Halfmoon bay. Where you are down to 5. So you can still see five miles down the road. Thats not a problem. But it does verify, you know, you are going to have usually going to have some reduced visibility at the coast. And were able to see that when we look at the map this way. The other part of the bay that stands out is up here, come up to the north bay with me and we looked at this a moment ago and im going to switch and instead of looking at the visibility readings im going to lose those. And im going to bring in the actual temperatures. Its 50 degrees right now in santa rosa. Thats noticeably cooler than it for most of the rest of the bay. If we come back out for the wide view once again. Look at San Francisco. 60 degrees. Thats pretty much in line with what so many other places are doing. So in one sense, its were starting to see the transition into falllike weather in that way. When we get into winter the north bay is always going to be noticeably colder on this morning. Than most of the rest of the bay. All right, i mentioned the possibility for rain on saturday. Heres just a quick overview on that. The pacific has gotten reoriented into more of the fall kind of storm track. And the next system is going to try and slink our way by saturday. Go to the lower resolution longrange model but watch what it does. It brings rain through Northern California and now thats a little overdone. Actually look at this a slightly different way. Color in the map looking at friday and saturday. Instead of using just the one model, were going to take theensemble which is a safer bet when you are four days out like this and this still has the idea of at least some rain. Not as impressive as the first run through we looked at there which was just one model. But when you group them all together, you can see we still have a chance you are going into friday and saturday for maybe, you know, perhaps like a couple hundredths of an inch of rain. Might be similar to the system that came through here on monday night. But its very early on that. So you will see when we get to the 7 day forecast at this point. Theres not even a rain drop on there. More on that in a second. Daytime highs for today, you can see the numbers for the north bay there. Well check out the temperatures for the heart of the bay and well get down to the south bay next. These numbers are almost identical what we were doing yesterday and thats been the theme ive been able to say about this tour that we take on the table top. Because there has really not been a whole lot of change in the numbers. So lets get into the 7 day forecast. First off for inland parts of the ba
