Training that these kids, students who have schoolwork, are going through this when they arent in school to help save lives. Reporter most operations dont involve a chopper, but they do require lots of human power and the dedication of volunteers. Jack sandrich from the marin county sheriffs search and rescue unit is training for missions that dont always end well. It is adrenaline and it is tiring and it is exhausting and sometimes you go into a mission knowing all youll be able to provide is closure. Reporter they climb steep terrain to locate missing hikers and bikers, often called in by First Responders to help locate people in mental distress who are suicidal. Its never an easy task, covering vast amounts of territory with limited resources. Were looking for clues, which can be anything from surveillance videos to footprints to sightings. Reporter we were there in 2020 when an elderly couple went missing for a week, presumed dead after an easy stroll through the woods in point reyes took a wrong turn. This group relentlessly searched for days. We found them and clearly saved their lives. Reporter the all volunteer crew undergoes rigorous training throughout the year. Its the only search and rescue team in the country that trains High Schoolers to become fulltime members. Were looking for the uncommon dedication because if a sar member doesnt show up, nobody takes their place. Reporter the unit is averaging one mission a week, often in other counties throughout the state. Some are body recoveries. Others are searches like for this woman. Shes one of the lucky ones. We also have very tragic outcomes. We find people that arent going to go home. At least were offering, you know, the beginning of healing and maybe the opportunity for closure for people, but those can be really difficult. Reporter on this night theyre testing a lightweight trail kit that makes the team more mobile when rescuing someone stuck in a ravine. The combination of highly Technical Training and real life scenarios can giving High School Students valuable life lessons. Its been incredible. Its made me more calm under pressure, made me more articulate. Seeing them operate with this poise when someones life is on the line and under these very stressful situations has given me through just absorbing it all, i think ive internalized part of that. So i feel very lucky to be out here. Reporter their work often goes unnoticed in the dark and in the deep woods, but all those hours of training are saving lives thanks to the men, women and youth of the marin county search and rescue unit. They are making a big impact in our communities, but theyve also been called to help with a number of search and rescue missions up and down the state and occasionally they have to miss school. How do you become a volunteer . To qualify, you have to be at least 14 years old, pass a fitness test and commit to serving at least two years. So many of them want to do this. Thanks to them. California wildfire season has been relatively tame so far. In the north bay its prompting the state to send two firefighting helicopters home until next year. Cal fire contracts the two helicopters for the north bay area and they each can carry up to 2,800 gallons of water, but theyre set to leave for the season because of the quiet summer when it comes to local wildfires. So far this year together theyve been sent to 102 vegetation fires. Between the two aircraft, the exclusive use helicopters that we have in unit, they responded to 102 wildfires this year. Overall this summer if you look at just numberwise, the number of wildfires that weve had are down to our fiveyear or even historical averages. Cal fire wants residents to know they have the personnel to fully serve the community and are currently at peak staffing levels. Reassuring to know. Lets check in with chief meteorologist paul heggen who has a closer look at our current fire threat from our state of the art virtual view studio. Hey there. This big map were standing on now was designed partly with the fire season in mind because we can track all types of weather phenomenon, whether its the fog thats currently rolling into the coast to eventually pinpointing the source, the location of fires as they develop tracking the smoke. Fortunately we havent seen much of that activity this year, partly because of efforts of those fire crews and the data being applied to the fire season, all the additional Camera Networks and also because the vegetation hasnt been as dry, nearly as dry, as past years. This is a chart that tracks what we call the Energy Release component. Its basically a fire fuel dryness metric. The blue line is where we have been in 2023 so far. We want the blue line to be as far below the red line, which is the maximum value, as possible. That really is where we have spent most of 2023, just occasionally approaching during our hottest weather that red line which indicates kind of maximum danger when the fire fuels are very dry. The gray line is kind of average, but were running even below that. You see the blue line taking a sudden dip towards the end. Thats because of the light shower activity that worked through the bay area monday night into early tuesday morning. Some minimal rainfall amounts, but just a little moisture makes a big difference in terms of the dryness of those fire fuels. Of course, we need additional rain chances over the coming weeks and months to continue to put a lid on the fire threat for this season. We do have an outside chance of some showers in the sevenday forecast. Ill talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. President biden is on his way to phoenix after he wrapped up his twoday trip here in the bay area. Before he left the president met with his counsel of advisers on science and technology in San Francisco and one big topic on the president s mind, you guessed it, artificial intelligence. Im going to take executive action and my administrations going to continue to work with Bipartisan Legislation so america leads the way towards responsible ai innovation. The president also addressed the looming Government Shutdown at todays event and he had this to say. If we have a Government Shutdown, a lot of vital work in science and health could be impacted from Cancer Research to food safety. So the American People need our republican friends in the house of representatives to do their job. Fund the government. While the clock is ticking, republicans only have three days to come to a deal until the Government Shutdown. Anne makovec joining me now with more on how the shutdown could affect all of us here in the bay area. The time clock is ticking. It sure is. Basically most entities that are run by the federal government will shut down, everything not deemed essential, but even workers who are essential wont be paid until a budget deal is reached. So they get a little testy, understandably, like air Traffic Controllers and agents for the tsa. They are considered essential, but since their paychecks would be withheld, a lot of them might just call in sick. That is what we saw last time around. Some airports had a hard Time Staffing security checkpoints. That was back in late 2018 and early 19 when the government shut down for a record 35 days. National parks, including yosemite and parts of the golden gate Recreation Area were closed. Muir woods had limited services. Ferries to Alcatraz Island were cut. We are still waiting to hear how San Franciscos fleet week could be affected. Thats coming up next week already, including the blue angels airshow that draws crowds from around northern california. Right now a spokesperson says theyre standing by to take guidance from the navy on that, but right now they are still planning as if it is a go. In fairfield the entire community surrounding Travis Air Force base would be affected. 125,000 retired veterans live there who rely on the base to get healthcare and food at discounted prices. It will be difficult the way we live today and the rising cost of living. It would be very, very difficult. Of course, theres the trickle down effect from retail to restaurants as people have less disposable income and closures cut down on foot traffic. Even the bay areas biotechnology industry could take a hit as Clinical Trials funded by the feds could also be put on hold. So all these Little Things could be affected with varying degrees. Number one, i dont want my air Traffic Controllers stressed, okay, if youre going on a flight coming up and when we talk about fleet week, were usually talking about the Weather Forecast that may stop things. You dont want a Government Shutdown to get in the way of that. Yeah. We we have a lot of factors that could work against them. Honestly, it does not look promising for them to come to a deal in time. They could come up with a stopgap measure support best hope. Remember all that trash collected recently from the bottom of lake tahoe. See how some of the that garbage got new life today as what . Santa clara valley Water District using explosives to blast through bedrock as they work the 1,700foot tunnel near anderson dam which will let them drain the reservoir faster in case of an earthquake, storm or some other emergency. It is part of a larger 1. 4 billion project to tear down anderson dam and build a new one starting sometime next year. Once its finished the Water District is hoping theyll be able to end water use restrictions. One year ago a Nonprofit Team by the name of clean up the lake did exactly that. They collected more than 25,000 pounds of trash from the waters of lake tahoe. To come across 50 tires in one dump site and to pull out over 100 in a mile has just been kind of tear jerking. We have an update. They turned some of that trash into treasure. Reporter dina cupper if kupfer has this story. Reporter its a sculpture unlike any other. Its amazing when you work on something so long to see it come to this kind of culmination. Reporter the art installation called surfaced was unveiled wednesday in south lake tahoe. On the surface its a beautiful nine foot tall by eight foot wide eagle eye catching piece, but its story begins deep below the surface of lake tahoe. We pulled out 25,281 pounds of small litter items. Reporter thats collin west, founder of clean up the lake and a professional scuba diver, one of the hundreds of volunteers, which included divers, kayakers, jet skiers and boat captains who worked tirelessly the last 159 days to remove waste, an effort they hoped to complete in six months, but Mother Nature had other plans. We were hit with the caldor fire, had record snow in december and were shoveling 17 feet off jetskis and boats. The fact they had this incredible inspiration to pick up all the trash from the lake, it was just a Perfect Match for the artistic process. Reporter artist joel dean stockdale and yostina samacova built the sculpture which takes on the form of a bald eagle and trout. We are so grateful the team trusted us. Reporter the base representing a Ponderosa Pine is made from anchor chains and rope. The fish is a mosaic of sunglasses and fishing gear and the eagles feathers were formed using buoys and bumpers. All the material has a story. Everything we use in our everyday lives. Reporter while this is a small representation of what was pulled from the blue waters of lake tahoe, the message couldnt be more clear. Taking what used to be hunks of garbage and now its a pristine, clean, beautiful reminder to protect lake tahoe moving forward in the future. Hats off to them lets keep it pristine and clean. Lets head over to paul heggen now in our state of the art virtual studio. Weve got a chance of showers heading into the weekend, an interesting pattern as we finish off september. For the short term, we have one more day of just normal late september weather for us, seasonably warm which means it should be comfortable thursday afternoon. Theres a storm system swirling to our north over the gulf of alaska. A chunk will sweep down towards us friday and saturday bringing much cooler air. Thats locked in and its going to bring a chance for showers, emphasize chance because the forecast models are all over the place in terms of the range of possibilities, how much rain the bay area could see, if any at all. In the short term, well see plenty of sunshine tomorrow. The little fog will burn off quickly. More clouds build in friday. By about this time friday we are going to see more clouds than sunshine, but were still dry. Any chance of showers holds off until later friday night. You see its very hit or miss activity for the bay area. This forecast model sends the bulk of that rain farther down the coast towards the monterey peninsula and even towards the Central California coast. Other forecast models Say Something different. The one i showed you for futurecast indicates trace amounts for the bay area. The best chance of adding up something would be mainly in the Santa Clara Valley and the santa cruz mountains. We have one with the same pattern the high amounts the farther south you go but shows at least a few hundredths of an inch of rain across the board with some spots topping 0. 1inch of rain. Thats not to put a complete end to fire season, but every drop helps adding a little moisture to the fire fuels. Now in the here and now, we are still talking about temperatures that were warm today, cooling off nicely as we speak, a mix of 60s and 70s on the map, 70 degrees in san jose and morgan hill, mid60s in los gatos, the warmest spots mid70s around antioch. That is the warmest spot around the region, 75 degrees. Temperatures are in the low 60s in oakland and San Francisco. Youre down to below 60 degrees along the coast and half moon bay, Still Holding onto the mid60s in redwood city. Farther north were seeing temperatures dropping off as well, mostly low to mid60s in the north bay valleys. Youll be some of the coolest spots by early tomorrow morning dropping down to about 50 degrees as we begin the day on thursday. We are going to warm up very quickly. Lets look at those forecast low temperatures for early thursday morning and most of us in the low to mid50s, just the warmest locations staying in the upper 50s, some spots right around 50 degrees in the north bay valley to begin the day. High temperatures warm up quickly. Temperatures across the region beginning with the north bay where we start off around 50 and warm more than 30 degrees by tomorrow afternoon, low 80s pretty much for all communities of the north bay, more variation around San Francisco and oakland, low to mid70s with low 80s down the peninsula and redwood city, upper 60s along the coast and half moon bay. Youll see more sunshine breaking through before the fog reforms. Low to mid80s in the Santa Clara Valley, upper 70s around fremont with temperatures inland and the east bay the warmest we can find, east of mount diablo only hitting the upper half of the 80s, just barely, 86 degrees in antioch. Lets look at the sevenday forecast which does include kind of a wild ride, especially for inland parts of the bay area. We drop sharply down into only the lower half of the 70s for the warmest spot by saturday and we climb up the other side of the temperature roller coaster, above average tuesday and wednesday. Its the same trend around the bay, just not quite as wild of a ride, more of a kiddie coaster ride with temperatures bottoming out saturday with upper 60s around the bay and temperatures cooler along the coast. Its along the coast where we have been bold enough at this point to add a chance of showers to the forecast. You can see those collecting on the glass in our virtual terrarium, a few drops from the clouds. Coastal parts of the bay area have the best chance of measurable moisture with this type of system. Thats likely the case heading into the weekend. This is all over the place in terms of how the the forecast models are depicting it. Well keep you updated in case you have to adjust any outdoor plans this weekend. Thank you. Coming up, the taylor swift effect on the nfl, what i drdreamt you d didntt cacashback thihis flight.
