On the November Ballot to propositions take aim at the criminal Justice System and money proposition 25 would end the states cash bail system and replace it assessing a persons flight risk and threat to the community with the help of Technology Used by a judge to decide whether or not a person is released awaiting trial supporters argue that current money bail system is racist classist and unfair. Its a system that criminalizes poverty. Its a system that the lower low income folks in communities of color for and essentially a judges you based on the size of your wallet nobody deserves to sit in jail. Necessarily just because they dont have enough money in their bank account. The governor and the California Democratic party are among those for prop 25 the bail bond industry is fighting it but opponents also includes some like the aclu of Southern California who agree the current money bail system is flawed but who worry the tools used to replace it helped by algorithms pose a problem and could still lead tobias your algorithm might be kind of fun when youre looking to pick the next movie you want to watch and you get a suggestion but were talking about someones freedom. You know, theres a tremendous concern that these computer algorithms will let people out of jail who no business being out of jail. And well hold people in jail who have no business being held a yes vote on prop 25 means you want to replace cash bail with risk assessments. A no vote means you want to preserve the status quo proposition 20 voters are also being asked to decide on proposition 20 prop 20 is just intended to fix some of the unintended consequences of some prior laws top 20 is an effort to roll back common sense voter approved reforms this measure would allow certain theft crimes to be charged as felonies it would require dna collection from certain misdemeanor convicts and it would increase the number of felonies defined as violent disqualifying those Prison Inmates from being considered for early parole someone who kidnaps and traffics a child for or commits a rape of a person by drugs. Or commits a violent assault on a transgender person and a hate crime is currently qualified as a nonviolent offender eligible for Early Release and we want to qualify these clearly violent offenses as violent opponents argue for proposition extremely out of touch, it is dangerous for Public Safety. They claim prop 20s changes to prior laws would increase incarceration and decrease savings use now to Fund Programs that help prevent crime. They also argue changes to parole would does incentivize prison rehab programs which help reduce repeat offenses, everybody that is under that that proposition targets is already getting out of prison. Theyre coming home to your community right like do you want them to come home better. Want them to come on the same different views on how to protect Public Safety now up for a vote.
