Supreme court today ruled against the Trump Administrations controversial proposal to add a Citizenship Question on the 2020 census the majority on the Supreme Court said the Congress Department needs to provide a clearer explanation as to why they want to ask about a persons citizenship status. John roberts joined the courts, and the 54 decision. They say they have evidence that the move was politically motivated. California is among the states that could lose billions of dollars in federal funding if the immigrant population is under count. It would be a sad appearance of people, if it says on their i am not going to be counted. Because it means so much in terms of who we are as a nation. It is not clear if the Trump Administration could try again with a fuller explanation of the reasoning, since the deadline is july 1st. Jesse gary tells us elected leaders in the south bay say the ruling is a win but the fight is far from over. Reporter one by one an array of speakers step before the microphones and cameras outside the Santa Clara County building. It had the Supreme Court ruling. It is a partisan political move. Having an undercount in the census would seriously cause us to have bad information. This decision sends a message to everybody in the county that you belong. That you are counted. Reporter local leader say santa clara is the largest and hardest county in the bay area to acquire an accurate population count. From on documented residences to the housing challenge to those who are not fluent english speakers. All of whom should be a part of the count. Since 1787 people of color have been undercounted. That is why it is so important for us to be counted. Reporter and couldnt inclusion of the citizens in question they argue with the press the count reducing the federal representation, local funds and local services. The constitution of the United States cost for an enumeration of all the people in the United States, not just the citizens. So when you include a Citizenship Question, several political scientists and sociologists will tell you it has the very predictable effect of lowering the number of noncitizens who respond, and also the number of citizens who respond. Many selfpay politicians and administrators requires everyone to remain vigilant. We have received a small victory on our task for justice. If we are going to a census, for gods sake get it right, dont be afraid. Dont let that fear keep you from participating. Because if you do, then trump really will win. Were less than an hour away from night two of the chronic residential camp primary debate. Tonight include michael bennet, joe biden, kristen gillibrand, pat Kamala Harris, john hickenlooper, Eric Swalwell, Marianne Williamson and andrew yang. Last nights debate touch on a range of issues from immigration to gun control, to healthcare. Joining us now is a Political Science professor from sonoma state. Thank you for being here. What will you be watching for tonight . Really, similar to last night, what is the alternative to the establishment of biden or sanders . Sanders represents the progressive wing. What is the next generation look like . Is the next generation represented by Kamala Harris of california or is Elizabeth Warren taking on the mantle, if you will, of aggressive cause. Does joe biden have the most to lose this evening . He wont go low because he will take a page from the obama administration. What he will do is talk about obama being his friend, he is Vice President. He will go down. He should be expected but the biggest person to do the attack will be not there, and that is president trump. He has a comfortable margin over every candidate they certainly need to make their mark. Look up Eric Swalwell, Eric Swalwell needs to make his mark because he needs money. He needs cash, he needs to stay alive, at least through the next round of debates and if he can terms of some momentum. If you Kamala Harris she has to be the alternative, if you will, to any kind of establishment candidate so she has a lot riding on this. Most of these other candidates are one trick pony. And what i mean by that, if you look at andrew yang he wants to talk about basic income. If you look at some of the other candidates and they have a particular issue they want to push. Ainsley couldnt do this last night with climate change, we will see if they get an opportunity to do that tonight, that will be something to watch. To talk about the Supreme Court ruling, what are your thoughts on that when it comes to the census question of whether or not you are a citizen . As we saw in the previous hour the census question is too late to get on but if the president wants to push the census out he talked about that. That would be a possibility but this helps california, it helps account, it helps will be called the rising american electorate. Young people who set out the president ial election are hugely powerful in terms of the gerrymandering in the courts throwing this out, gerrymandering cases rule on this, that was a big deal. They have dealt with this and Justice Roberts kind of casting his hands aside about that. That is terribly disappointing rolling. Will let that be the last word. As always, thank you for being here.
