The man reportedly assaulted people. Youre up in bodega bay, learning what you can from authorities. Reporter good morning gasia and dave. A lot of questions this morning. There is a heavy Police Presence that remains in the Pelican Harbor subdivision. Blocking off a portion of pelican loop with crime scene tape and officers as well. We want to start with whats happening this morning. Just a few minutes ago, we were able to take images of deputies who were searching that neighborhood. They are going door to door asking questions of neighbors and residents in this area. They were also searching a grassy area. So pelican loop sits on the water overlooking the pacific ocean. Theres a cliff side here. They were searching through all of the cliffs and grass here. Unclear exactly what they were searching for. But we do know that this is the area where the crime scene appears to have happened last night. Now lets take a look at some of that video last night around 8 00. We understand that samona county Sheriff Deputies and the california Highway Patrol were each called out to this subdivision. We understand that there were reports that a man was assaulting several people in this subdivision here in the area of swan drive. We understand that when officers arrived, they found at least two people that needed to get to a hospital quickly. They also learned that the suspect reportedly stole a car and was found a half mile away here on pelican loop. Its unclear what happened once deputies arrived and found the suspect apparently something happened to where they say the suspect approached them and attacked them and one of the deputies was forced to open fire. Theres no word on that suspects condition and theres no word on the people who were allegedly assaulted. We understand that they were taken to the hospital by helicopter. We are waiting to get word on where they went and how they are doing this morning and there are a lot of questions as to what led up to these injuries. Were unclear if there was a shooting, a stabbing, if someone was beaten up. All we know several people were assaulted and ultimately a suspect was shot by law enforcement. New this morning in san jose, reports of a fire last night may have been started by kids playing with fireworks. It started just before 11 00 last night near mcgreary avenue. One of them exploded and started this fire. One man smelled the smoke and grabbed a water hose to fight the flames. I worry that our house is going to get on fire, too. I climb up the ladder and went on top of the roof. Make sure everybody was out of the facility, so we are glad nobody got hurt. At least four trees burned and two parked cars were damaged. Ktvus frank is out there right now trying to have a live report coming up at the bottom of the hour. Also new this morning, Contra Costa County fire inspectors are looking at the causes of 37 fires overnight. They already determined five were caught by fireworks, including this one in martinez. No homes burned, but a long stretch of grassland was torched. Crews battled flames near the brewery. Crews were so busy at this point, they needed to call in help from the east Bay Regional Parks fire crews. The cause of the fire has not been determined. Fireworks were found at two other fires burning nearby. In antioch, crews got a fire under control fairly quickly. Also tall grass in this neighborhood. Fire crews say the number of fires they had to deal with last night was quote, over the top. They say they suspect many of them were started by firework, even though all fireworks are illegal in Contra Costa County. They had several emergency calls hurt while using fireworks. No fire crews were hurt fighting those flames. A suspect at an assault in a muni station was killed when he ran on to highway 280. It happened last night near the geneva avenue exit. That suspect was running away from the police when he ran on to the northbound lanes and a car hit him and killed him. The incident forced the closure of all the northbound lanes of 280 for more than an hour. And one person has died. Another one has been hurt after a car crashed off the edge of a windy road in santa clara county. It happened just before midnight on Mount Hamilton road near 3 springs road. Two dozen san jose firefighters rushed out there to surviving victim was able to get out of the car and climb up the hillside as the crews were arriving. He was taken to a hospital. We dont know the extent of her injuries. The team used special equipment to go 200 feet down the hillside, trying to save that second victim. That person died. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. And the chp will stay very busy through this holiday weekend, as officers are looking for drunk drivers. 4th of july maximum enforcement period will continue until the end of sunday. Also, they are teaming up with the nevada Highway Patrol cracking down on speeders along interstate 80 between San Francisco and the nevada state line. Time is 7 07. Surveillance footage from this restaurant shows the force of the quake, as the building shook, items fell off shelves. Employees ran for cover. The quake shook bottles off the shelves in this liquor store, wiping out most of its envenn inventory. Also left a huge crack in this road in the small town of sona. In ridge crest, a town of just 29,000 people, residents braced for the worst. They are now dealing with a huge mess inside their house. They say the shaking lasted about 30 seconds and knocked them off their feet. I couldnt get off the floor. I wasnt sure i could stand on my hands and knees. It was never ending. I tried to get off the couch and i couldnt. Starting for the door, and it knocked him down. It was just unbelievable. At least two house fires were reported in ridgecrest after the earthquake. Although it wasnt sure what sparked the flames. At ridge crest regional hospital, patients were evacuated as a precaution. Ultimately, about 20 patients were transferred to other facilities so engineers could inspect broken pipes at the hospital. The shakg also cut power to several local businesses. I started feeling swaying and i felt like, was i getting dizzy or something . I realized all the boxes were swaying as well. But then all of a sudden, all of the lights turned off. A man was reportedly attacking people near Bodega Harbor just after 8 00 last night. They say several people were rushed to the hospital. The suspect apparently stole a car and later found. Thats when he reportedly attacked deputies and shot by a deputy. Were working to learn the conditions of the victims and the suspect. Just the last two hours, 14 aftershocks hit as a result of yesterdays 6. 4 magnitude earthquake in the central and southern part of california. No deaths have been reported and no serious injuries have been reported. Now the communities affected are focusing on cleaning up the mess left behind. In ridge crest, 150 miles northeast of downtown l. A. , bottles and boxes were knocked off store shelves. The experts say the region is actually been overdue for a big quake. This type of earthquake is much more normal. On the long run, we expect earthquakes of this size, not even 6. 5, the longterm average is probably once every five or ten years in Southern California. Aftershocks are expected to for weeks. People near the epicenter enrolled in the program had more than 40 seconds to get ready. A fiveyearold indiana boy is doing well after falling nearly 30 feet down a sewer drain. Happened around 9 00 last night in the city of evansville. The boy somehow fell into the hole while watching fire works with his family. Police and fire and rescue crews responded and worked for an hour to reach him. The hole was too narrow. Rescue crews came up with a plan to lower a swing set seat down to him and had him stand in it and pull him up. Our Rope Rescue Team is trained to do whatever they can to try and makeshift whatever is needed to get the young man out. That was an idea since he had some issues trying to respond to us. New this morning, new video from overnight from a witness who saw Oakland Police clear out a side show near the high street 880 on ramp. Hundreds of people were there overnight when officers arrived. One person was hit by a car. At least one person set off fireworks during the side show. Moments ago, Oakland Police told us they process some 200 vehicles. Well keep you up to date on the investigation here as we learn more information. Fire investigators are looking into the cause of three dozen fires from overnight. They have already determined at least five of them were caused by firework, including this one in martinez right near san carlos street. No homes were damaged. A long stretch of grassland did burn. In pittsburgh, firefighters battled flames near the brewery. Crews were so busy by that time, they needed to call in help from crews with east bay parks. The cause of this fire has not been determined just yet. We are told fireworks were found at two other fires that burned nearby. And in antioch, firefighters go the the upper hand on wild forest road. It was also tall grass in this particular neighborhood. Firefighters say they suspect many of these fires were started by fireworks, even though all fireworks are banned in Contra Costa County. Throughout the night, they had several medical emergency calls for people who were hurt while using fireworks. New this morning, reports that a fire late last night may have been started by children who were playing with fireworks. The fire started just before 11 00 last night. Neighbors say the children threw fireworks down the street and one exploded and started this fire. One man says he came outside and grabbed a water hose to keep the flames from spreading. I worry that our house climb up the ladder and on top of the roof and tried to spray our house with the water. Make sure everybody was out of the facility. So, we are grateful nobody got hurt. Neighbors say at least four trees burned in the fire and two parked cars were damaged. A car crashed right off the edge of a road in santa clara county. This happened just before midnight near 3 springs road in allen rock. Two dozen firefighters responded to this crash. The surviving victim was able to get out of the vehicle and climb up the hillside. He was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. A team used special equipment to go 200 feet down the hillside and try to save that second victim. That person was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of that crash is still under investigation. Also new this morning, investigators are looking into what caused a car to run into starbucks. People inside were gone by the time police and fire officials arrived at the scene. Fire Officials Say the starbucks was badly damaged. San Francisco Police say a suspect in an assault at a muni station was killed when he ran on to interstate 280 right near the geneva avenue exit. The suspecran on to the northbound lanes and was hit by a car and killed. The incident forced a closure of all northbound lanes for more than an hour. A developing story, where Sheriff Deputies opened fire on a man in bodega bay. The man reportedly assaulted people in the street. Christina is live in bodega bay to tell us what you learned there. Christina. Reporter we can tell you in the last 15 minutes, weve seen samona county Sheriff Deputies leave this area here in the Bodega Harbor subdivision. This is where all the activity was unfolding. We saw investigators going door to door to homes talking to people who live in the homes or people that rented out these homes for the weekend. This started just after 8 00 last night. We understand the samona county Sheriffs Office and the chp got calls to come to this subdivision that is right on the golf course because there were reports of a man who was assaulting several people. When officers got here, they say they found at least two victims who needed to get to the hospital very quickly. They were able to call in helicopters to get those patients to a hospital. Its unclear what their conditions are at this hour. They started to go after the suspect. He was found half a mile away from the initial call on pelican loop. That suspect approached officers. One deputy opened fire and hit him. It is unclear of his condition at this point. We know neighbors are shaken up. This is a quiet neighborhood as you will ever find. So safe here. It would have to be a specific domestic issue of some sort, i would think. Very low crime area. Earlier this morning around 6 30, we saw investigators searching an area along pelican loop. They were looking for evidence, trying to take photographs as well. Its unclear what they were searching for. Again, its unknown this hour, the condition of the suspect and the condition of the victims. We reached out to the samona county Sheriffs Office. They plan on releasing more information. Right now, its too early to give us details. The Police Department has been called in. They will be the ones taking the lead because this is an avesser involved shooting. They have been called in as an outside investigating agency to help on this case. Live in bodega bay, ktvu fox 2 news. New this morning between midnight and 3 00 a. M. , there were seven aftershocks with a magnitude 3 or higher following Southern Californias strongest earthquake in 20 years. Later today, the authorities will look into the shake alert earthquake Warning System because they say it did not warn people in the Los Angeles Area about yesterdays 6. 4 quake in kern county. It was centered right near the city of ridge crest. Thats a remote area 150 miles northeast of downtown los angeles. The u. S. Geological survey says the quake shook along two faults. The large fault was not one of them. The governor declared a state of emergency to make sure people affected by the earthquake get the help and resources they need. As ktvu shows us, the shaking could be felt as far away as los angeles, even parts of the south bay. Surveillance footage from this restaurant shows the force of the quake as the building shook, items fell off shelves. Employees ran for cover. The quake shook bottles off the shelves in this liquor store, and causing thousands of dollars in damage. It also left a huge crack in this road in the small town. Ridge crest, residents braced for the worst. Now dealing with a huge mess inside their house. They say the shaking lasted about 30 seconds and knocked them off their feet. I couldnt get off the floor. I wasnt sure i could stay on my hands and knees. It was never ending. I tried to get off the couch and i couldnt. He was going for the door and it knocked him down. It was just unbelievable. At least two house fires were reported in ridge crest after the earthquake. Although it wasnt clear what sparked the flames. At ridge crest regional hospital, patients were evacuated as a precaution. Ultimately, 20 patients were transferred to other facilities so engineers could inspect broken pipes at the hospital. The shaking cut power to several local businesses. I started feeling swaying and i felt like, am i getting dizzy or something . All the boxes were swaying as well. But then all of a sudden, all of the lights turned off. The shaking was much less severe 100 miles south in los angeles. Where one person took this footage of their Swimming Pool with water sloshing around. Seismologists say we have been in a quiet period in terms of earthquakes in california. This type of earthquake is much more normal. On the long run, we expect earthquakes of this size, not even 6. 5, the longterm average is probably once every five or ten years. Thursdays quake was weaker than the north ridge quake in 1994, which registered at 6. 6, and killed dozens of people and caused millions of dollars in damage. According to the independent journal, conserving water will help make sure firefighters have enough water available and make sure storage tanks dont become depleted. Free Public Parking lots were set aside for people to legally set off safe and sane fireworks. One family came from pleasantton and said they enjoyed setting off sparklers in dublin. The risk of fire in california, its nice to have a couple places to come. They are trying to give you a safe environment to do it, right . In a parking lot, where you know, theres not many flammables. They have water, so when youre done, pick them up and dispose of them. Dublin is one of ten bay area cities that allows people to set off safe and sane fireworks. Thousands of Property Owners are getting a special benefit from Major League Baseballs allstar game. New this morning, illegal fireworks may have caused a fire in a san jose neighborhood. Quick thinking neighbors helped stop a fire from spreading. Good morning to you, there is a reason why fireworks are illegal here in the city at san jose and the proof is right behind me here. The aftermath of a fire in east san jose, one car completely totaled. Another severely damaged. In fact, two others were damaged. Source of the fire, these now charred cyprus trees that went up by match sticks in the night. The fire started shortly before 11 00 last night. Cyprus trees have an oily bark and lit up the night sky right next to this home at 1845 luke court. San jose fire responded quickly. Witnesses say a number of teenagers were in the neighborhood at the time playing with fireworks. We spoke with the neighbor and he could not believe his eyes when he stepped outside his aunts home right next door. When i come out, the tree was on fire already. It is huge. Were you worried for your own home . Not my own home, my aunts home. I just stay here to watch the house. If the house gets on fire and i get blamed, thats why i was so worried about it. Were you hosing off the rooftop . I saw the fire, and thats why im thinking, i just went on top of the roof and tried to hose the roof down. Well, two homes suffered minor damage. No injuries reported. Thats good news. One car totally lost. Two have been damaged. San jose fire believe it was fireworks that ignited the blaze, but at this point, they dont have any suspects. I did talk to the homeowner inside the home and she is vietnamese. Her english was not good. She is still a little shaken up. The family is doing just fine. By the way, they were not at the house last night during the fire. Thats the very latest. Were here in san jose. Ktvu channel 2 news. A developing story weve been following. Sheriff deputies shot a suspect. The man was reportedly attacking people near Bodega Harbor just after 8 00 last night. Several people were rushed to the hospital. The suspect apparently stole a car and was later found on pelican loop. He was shot by a deputy. Working to learn the conditions of the victim and the suspect. We have a crew at the scene and weve been bringing you live reports throughout the morning. In the last four hours, at least 14 aftershocks following the 6. 4 magnitude quake that hit the southern part of the state yesterday. No serious injuries have been reported and now communities affected are focusing on the cleanup. In the city of ridge crest, 150 miles northeast of downtown los angeles, boxes flew off store shelves. The region has been overdue for a big quake. This type of earthquake is much more normal. On the long run, we expect earthquakes of this size, not even 6. 5. The longterm average is 5 to 10 years in Southern California. Seismologists say aftershocks are likely to continue for weeks. This is the first big earthquake since california installed the shake alert Warning System. So people enrolled in the program have more than 40 seconds to get ready, but no warning was sent to areas further away because the full force of the quake was not felt there. Experts are now deciding if they need to change when and where warnings are sent. During a News Conference, city officials were interrupted by a strong aftershock. Watch. We started doing a grid search, street looking for damage. Aftershock. That was an earthquake. We just had an aftershock. We want to make sure to get enough resources as we can possibly here to make sure that we take care the communities that are going to be affected. Because weve had over 87 aftershocks of this, we dont know what is going to happen and with that, the state of emergency allows us to seek significant help from other governmental entities. New this morning in chicago, police are investigating the stabbings of three people during the citys 4th of July Celebration. A fight broke out at navy pier after the annual fireworks show, causing a stampede. At least 16 people were trampled. The stabbing victims are in serious to critical condition. So far, no word on any arrests. The white house has a big decision to make, whether to move past the Supreme Court ruling and add a citizenship question. Douglas reports from washington on the decision the president could make to trigger a new wave of lawsuits. There have been mixed signals on this. Now a federal judge wants to know what the administration plans to do with the 2020 census. The military flyovers may have stolen the show, but listen closely to President Trumps word. The giant hammer that was stolen in the north bay months ago drew headlines and left many people wondering what happened to it. Henry shows us the hammer came back with a lot of holiday fanfare. Glad to see it back and how they ever got away with it, i dont know. You may remember this hammer was on display outside a community center. Someone, somehow, stole it back in october. The artist has no idea why. It doesnt make any sense. And, the 300 pound steel hammer head showed up. The handle was never found. Literally, the vandals took the handle. So he decided to make a new handle from redwood and reattached it. The new hammer was unveiled at the citys 4th of july festivities. We caught up with the mayor, aka, dj gavel. Everyone has a different opinion about it. Some people thought it was great. Other people thought it was a joke. At the end of the day, it got people talking. The guy took the time to make that, and then somebody stole it and he replaced it quick. That was really nice. People will be able to appreciate art. The ramifications of public art.
