Reporter he was able to use his axe to slow his fall for about 100 feet. And after that he fell another 500 or 600 feet. Reporter he was airlifted to a helicopter medevac to a center where he was pronounced dead. A crew of at least 40 assisted in the rescuest. One said with the falling rock and ice, it felt like being in a bowling alley. The conditions up there are bad for hikers, climbers, and, quite frankly, for the rescuers as well. Reporter it took eight hours to bring two other men and a group to safety. The fourth other was rescued by sled. She suffered no physical injury but was too distraught to climb down unassisted.
