Professors at California Lutheran University continue their push to create bilingual opportunities for students, an acknowledgment of the significant Latino population in and around Ventura County and the increasing demand for Spanish-language media. In the last few years, the Thousand Oaks university's student newspaper The Echo included a Spanish-language insert in its print edition called El Eco. This semester, El Eco was turned into a lab class for the first time. And now, professors in the communication department — Kirstie Hettinga — and languages and cultures department — LaVerne Seales, Sheridan Wigginton and Genesis Rodriguez — are working toward establishing a Spanish media minor at the university in the fall.
