Across the Ravaged Land, Nick Brandt's Lioness with Cub Feeding, Masai Mara shows two lionesses looking outward, fiercely protective of their cubs. Brandt’s image celebrates the elegance of the mother lion who is statuesque as she feeds her cub. Brandt, who works exclusively in East Africa, has spent nearly 20 years photographing disappearing animal populations using a medium-format camera. Unlike his contemporaries who favor telephoto or zoom lenses, Brandt shoots his subjects from close range, requiring hours of observation and a measure of trust. Nick Brandt (British, b. 1966) studied Film and Painting from the Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London. His close range, black and white images of African wildlife and landscape have garnered him international recognition and is a celebrated activist. Brandt co-founded the Big Life Foundation in 2010, which enforces anti-poaching projects in East Africa. He has exhibited his photography in major solo exhibitions at the Multimedia Museum of Art, Moscow; the Fotografiska Museum, Stockholm; the Salo Art Museum, Finland; the Hangram Art Museum, Seoul; among many other international institutions. Brandt currently lives and works in Southern California.
