Mayor's View: New and expanding business in downtown Freeport Jodi Miller Special to The Journal-Standard Wednesday is Cinco de Mayo, a celebration of Mexican heritage. It commemorates the date of the Mexican Army’s victory over the French invasion led by Napoleon III in 1862. The city of Freeport has many establishments that offer specials to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and our diverse community. We also have a few new or expanding businesses to celebrate. A new salon, Ci Ci’s, has opened at 9 North Van Buren Ave.. Kurt Koester Studio at 26 W. Main St. in downtown has expanded to include a framing business. Both of these add destinations in our downtown. Congratulations to both of you.
