Minnesota food shelves ended 2020 with record visitors, and more of them are older adults

More than 300 cars lined up around the block by New Creation Lutheran Church in Shakopee last month, for a pop-up food distribution by Esperanza, a Shakopee nonprofit that works with low-income residents in the south metro and across the Twin Cities. Kenny Smith and Jan Sautler loaded food into trunks and tailgates during the distribution.
A growing number of Minnesotans — especially older adults — have been seeking help from food shelves.
Visits to the state's 350 food shelves in 2020 rose by nearly 7% over 2019, almost double the typical annual increase, according to final tallies released by Hunger Solutions, a statewide advocacy group.
