More Ledger stories will be subscriber only On Monday, regular readers of The Ledger’s website will notice a small change. Some of our top stories – on average about one a day – will be reserved solely for subscribers, an effort to provide greater value to our most loyal readers. But we also hope that by showcasing our best local work, we can encourage the tens of thousands of others who breeze through our website occasionally to stop, join our family and engage with us more regularly. The Lakeland Evening Ledger printed its first issue on Aug. 22, 1924. It predates Bok Tower (1929), the original Lake Mirror Promenade (1928), the Polk Theatre (1928), Henley Field (1925) and Bryant Stadium (1941). Florida Southern College was new in town, a drab speck among the groves around Lake Hollingsworth; its iconic collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture wouldn’t be commissioned until 1938.
