To waive an Arraignment Appearance in Fulton County after embracing the spectacle from his previous three arraignments. Six more trump codefendants, including former Chief Of Staff mark meadows, Jeffrey Clark and former trump attorney john eastman have entered not guilty pleas and filed waivers for their arraignments. The trump 2024 campaign has been boosted by the massive legal challenges with trump now in a dead heat in a hypothetical rematch with joe biden. Joining me garrett haake, joyce vance and jackie alemany. Garrett, start things off. We have had multiple pleas this morning right up against the deadline. Take us through what we know so far. Reporter theres just one of the 19 codefendants who has not entered a plea thus far. A relatively minor player in the saga. One of the Elections Officials caught up in the broader rico case here. Donald trump having filed his Appearance Waiver last week. We knew would not be attending. As you pointed out at the top, its a Split Decision for the trump campaign. They have raised so much money around his legal problems. Particularly around his appearances in various courtrooms, be they in new york or his surrender in georgia a few weeks ago where they raised more than 7 million. Now they are trying to raise money off the fact he is not going, pointing out it will be televised, its a spectacle that he doesnt need to participate in, even though those have benefitted him. We are looking out for, that im most looking out for, doesnt have to do with tomorrows hearing at all, which sounds like it will be a lot of paperwork. Its a decision about the mark meadows next step. Meadows has been arguing that his case belongs in Federal Court, even though he pled not guilty via waiver this morning. That decision from the judge about whether his case will move to Federal Court remains outstanding. To me, thats the most interesting next shoe to drop in this saga. Im so happy you brought that up. Jackie, weigh in on that for us. Especially how you see Rudy Giuliani there, his mug shot, second from the former president , how he is watching how this plays out with mark meadows as to whether he can move this thing to a Federal Court. Yeah. We have been waiting for trumps lawyers to actually follow meadows and file to have these charges tried federally. His lawyers have yet do that. As garrett noted, its likely because they are waiting to see how things shake out. We saw meadows appear before the judge last week in trying to make this argument that he was acting in his capacity as a federal official, as a gatekeeper for the former president. Seeking to depict his involvement as part of his duties as trumps top aide in the white house and his senior advisor. His attorneys have obviously argued that this should qualify the case for federal removal. In that situation, he would then be more likely to potentially dismiss those charges if the case did ultimately get moved. Its a little bit of a long shot case here. There are many people on the ground, particularly in georgia, who have said that meadows very clearly was not acting in his capacity as a federal official because he didnt have the rights constitutionally to begin with to intervene in a State Election when he was part of the efforts that trump was taking to overturn the results of the election, like pressuring officials, like Francis Watson and the former secretary of the and the Secretary Of State at the time to try to identify these unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud. It is interesting that trumps lawyers have yet to actually go ahead and file this motion for federal removal. Its likely because there are a host of others who are also in line to do this. They are waiting to see how which way the judge ultimately falls on this. Joyce, this is a two part. Does his argument qualify for moving to a Federal Court . At what point do you expect to get a decision on this from the judge . Judge jones decision will turn on whether mark meadows was working for Candidate Trump or President Trump when he acted in georgia. If he cant establish that he was working for the then president , his odds of removing this case become slim to none. The judge is aware that this is an unprecedented issue. It will be a Precedent Setting Decision at least for this case. I think he will take his time to get it right, knowing that regardless of who wins and who loses here, it is likely to land in the 11th circuit. Theres a lot of law coming out of this circuit, including a Supreme Court case involving two birmingham judges who tried to remove a civil case from state court to Federal Court. The analysis is indistinguishable between federal criminal cases and federal civil cases in this regard. So the judge has his work cut out for him to get it right. All that to say, i dont expect to see an opinion today. How massive of an undertaking, joyce, does fani willis have here when you have 18 codefendants, all tried to sever their cases from one another, a former president of the United States trying to push the can down the road when it comes to his trial date, a former Chief Of Staff trying to get his moved to a Federal Court . Talk about the undertaking d. A. Willis has and how realistic that trump could see a trial date before the 24 election. Its a big case with a lot of moving parts. But you know, thats the job. Thats what fani willis does for a living day in and day out. Its worth noting that this morning, georgias Attorney General indicted a rico case with 61 defendants. What shes doing is large in scope. It involves a former president. Its important because it involves Election Interference in 2020. Its not really outside of her wheelhouse. Thats difficult to explain that this is what the voters in Fulton County, georgia, elected her to do in cases that involve Violent Crime and politics and public corruption and all sorts of fraud. Its what she does. Garrett, wasnt to pivot for a moment. I know we are getting news on minority leader mitch mcconnell, hearing from his doctor after he froze publically two different times. What are we hearing on this . Reporter his office has released a statement from the capitol physician, the Senate Physician here saying that this physician has consulted with several neurologists who have seen mcconnell. Mcconnells office tells me thats four. And some other tests that have been done, including an mri. The physician has found in indication of any stroke or seizure related symptoms, nothing related to parkinsons disease. Ticking off some of the more serious possibilities that could have afflicted him. He is fit to return to duty. We will see Mcconnell Return to duty this afternoon when he is expected to speak on the senate floor. It will be the first time he has spoken publically since that episode late last week. A lot of folks, myself among them, will watch that closely for signs of his health and his recovery. This all stems from the fall and concussion he suffered in march of this year. Any expectation, garrett, that he or his office plans to further address this, or just move on when we hear from him . Mcconnell is most comfortable saying nothing about anything, particularly about limbself when himself when he doesnt want to. We wont hear much about this until his weekly conference. Welcome back. North koreas leader kim jongun may travel to russia this month for talks with president Vladimir Putin. The white house is telling us this could occur on monday. Mr. Putin wants mr. Kim to agree to send russia Artillery Shells and antitank missiles. Mr. Kim would like rush so to provide north korea with technology for satellites and Nuclear Powered submarines, according to american and allied officials. The last time that kim met putin was in april of 2019. At the time, kim traveling by Armored Train to the Pacific Coast of russia where they could meet possibly again. Joining me to talk about this is kier simmons. Talk about the implications of a meeting, a trip like this. The implications are multiple. First of all, as you laid out there, its simply a question of the two countries trying to do a deal. You are right to point out that the last time the two leaders met, President Putin and kim jongun, was in 2019. I was there to witness that. With many other reporters. He traveled by Armored Train, as you say. I think this is an extension of that relationship. A reheating of the relationship in the sense that since then we have had the covid pandemic. That had an enormous impact on north korea. I think what theyre doing is trying to negotiate, i suspect pyongyang thinks it has leverage given that russia needs munitions, especially the kind that north korea has for its war with ukraine. I think theres also another interesting thing to take away from this, which adds to this really body of evidence that this is becoming an attritional war. Potentially, its going to last a long time, maybe a very long time. Russia as well as ukraine are looking for munitions and armaments to enable them to sustain their campaigns in that conflict. Theres twofold things going on. Theres what the United States is saying and doing about it, and theres the timing of this meeting which seems some what suspect as well. I want to talk about what the United States is saying about this and why, in fact, they are publicizing it. John kirby last week saying publically warning publically Arms Negotiations between russia and north korea are advancing. We know russia obtained weapons previously from iran. Why would the americans, why would john kirby be going public with this, warning us about it . I think the target is actually beijing. Kirby is, i think, correctly the administration is showing the chinese that we are tracking this. We have a bead on this. We are very aware of it. We are concerned about it. Thats one target. The second is pyongyang, is to say to the dictator there that, again, we are aware of this. I think that the value in doing that is to ensure that our allies and partners and friends see that russia has options. Meaning that, we need to stand strong and continue sending the munitions from our side of this divide. Final thought, you mentioned the word attrition. I think keir did. Its not only the equipment that putin is burning through, its people. The other metric to watch here is, how is he going to make up for the troops on the battlefield . Dont look for north koreans to show up. He will have to go elsewhere. Talk to me about the timing here. We saw the russian president in this vulnerable state after the advance by prigozhin who we know has confirmed to be dead. You talk about the ukraine offensive, which has not been going as well as ukrainian would have liked. They have recently, i believe, just yesterday replaced their defense minister. Talk about the timing of this meeting considering what is happening geopolitically. Lets think about this as though it were the godfather. This is one family reaching out to another for assistance and weapons systems. Its a moment of putin demonstrating that he has the ability to move around. It comes off timing could haves off after the brics meeting, brazil, russia, india, south africa, china, that was held down in south africa. This is putin kind of flexing his international muscle showing that he has options. As you mentioned, he is getting more advanced systems from the iranians. He is trying to convince china, thats the main ball for putin. He is trying to convince china to come in on his side. I think xi is too smart for that. I think one should be worried about the other one stabbing them in the back the second they turn around. Are we still seeing Vladimir Putin in a vulnerable state . Is this an indication of that at all . You dont know because you are into pure putinology. Things can come out of nowhere in that world. I do think what happened with prigozhin is the reasserting of the russian bureaucracy, if you like. This Enormous Network of relationships that President Putin and the people around him have. Prigozhin was always in a difficult position when he was talking on, not putin, but the people around him. He was taking on the system. You have seen the system reassert itself. In some ways, you could argue President Putin is stronger now as a result of that. That being said, of course, i could be wrong. I think to go to, i think the other aspect of this is what it were seeing is the russians and the chinese and now looking at the north koreans, trying to create this alternative international sphere. Its notable both president xi and President Putin are not going to g20, but putin will go to china and meet with xi at a conference there later in the year. You can see the way they are knitted together by this determination to try to weaken u. S. Influence around the world. Hence the warning from kirby. Thank you.
