Capitol police what you knew donald trump had planned . You were in those meetings at the white house. Thats former congresswoman liz cheney calling out fellow republican jim jordan whos now a top candidate to replace Kevin Mccarthy as house speaker. Well have the latest on that race in just a moment. Meanwhile, donald trump could also be on capitol hill next week to endorse jordans bid for speaker. This would be trumps first visit to the capitol since the insurrection he inspired. And this comes as theres an alarming new report from the New York Times on trumps handling of nuclear secrets. Good morning and welcome to Way Too Early on this friday, october 6th. We made it to friday just barely. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for starting your day with us. And well begin this morning with the race for the speaker of the house. Currently only two announced candidates are in the running. House Judiciary Committee House Judiciary Chair jim jordan and majority leader Steve Scalise. Jordan is already shoring up support, securing the endorsement of former President Donald Trump overnight. Trump made the announcement where else but on truth social calling jordan a, quote, star. Nbc news spoke to jordan yesterday about his bid for the speakership and how he differs from Kevin Mccarthy as Congress Faces a rapidly approaching November 17th deadline to pass a Government Spending bill. The key is i think and i hope i can get our team to rally around the process i just described, which is that longerterm cr with that 1 cut, that leverage there put yourself in his reality which is republicans continue to stone wall him, the government is about to shutdown. Youre assuming i cant bring republicans together. Thats why im running. Someones got to bring the Republican Team together. I think thats the fundamental im saying thats the fundamental issue in this race, and i think i can do that. One voice who says jordan cant win the speakership is former republican congresswoman liz cheney. In a speech at the University Of Minnesota yesterday cheney predicted jordan will not earn enough votes, adding that if he does it would be a really bad look for the gop. Cheney also weighed in on the decision to oust Kevin Mccarthy. Jim jordan knew more about what donald trump had planned for january 6th than any other member in the house of representatives. And if the republicans decide that jim jordan should be the speaker of the house, there will be and i by the way, i dont think thats going to happen. I think hell lose. But if they were to decide that, there would no longer be any possible way to argue that a group of elected republicans could be counted onto defend the constitution. Kevin mccarthy at every moment over the course of the last two years has done more to enable and collaborate with and apologize for donald trump. The democrats made what is a principled and honorable and in my view the right decision to say we cannot abide by that. The republicans need to choose their speaker. Theyre in the majority, but we are not going to help to enable somebody who has done those things and who has apologized and appeased donald trump. I think they did exactly the right thing, and it was a courageous show of leadership. Joining us now nbc news capitol hill correspondent our friend julia serken. Jordan just picked up trumps endorsement and also Steve Scalise whos popular among many republicans though perhaps not mccarthy. Right now how are their chances . We heardbout other names potentially entering the fold. Kevinhern, for example, the chair of the republican sources Study Committee says hes been calling around members to get their endorsement. You see the full screen of republicans who voted to oust mccarthy. Jim jordan who certainly has the former president s ear, whos leading the charge on the Impeachment Inquiry in many respects into the current president and Steve Scalise, the majority leader who has served closely in mccarthys leadership although as you point out sometimes mccarthy certainly not happy with him as he almost was the person to take over mccarthys gavel when mccarthy failed during those first 14 rounds to secure the gavel in the first place, these two are really the front runners. And im told theyve been meeting with different factions of the House Republican conference. Jordan even joked with my colleague Ali Vitali He was losing his voice yesterday. I dont know how much it will help him secure those moderates, the vulnerable republicans who are certainly concerned someone like jordan could force them to take difficult votes. Jordan apparently in meeting with them yesterday according to sources had tried to quell some of those concerns. But the former president also potentially thinking about making a viz to the capitol, according of our sources, again to unify republicans now apparently behind jim jordan Behind Closed Doors so that they dont have that embarrassing showing that they had earlier this year where they couldnt call pallese on the house floor. Whoever is speaker confronts a rapidly ticking clock to Government Shutdown deadline. And one of the stickier issues is ukraine funding. Give us the sense there where both jordan and scalise stand on the approach to avoiding a shutdown but also kyiv assistance. Certainly scalise is more that traditional institutionalist republican leader as you know, jonathan, and he has been outspoken on ukraine aid. He and mccarthy have said this is something they need to continue to do, also avoiding a Government Shutdown, something jordan yesterday could not say he would have acted in the same Light Mccarthy had if he was squeezed down to the wire with conservatives when hed worked across the aisle to avoid that Government Shutdown. We dont know if thats jordans reality and he was also the orchestrator in many ways of the longest shutdown in history in 2019 under former President Trump. Jordan certainly supported it. When it comes to ukraine jordan said he would not support that, he would not put that on the floor. The question is would he support it if it was joined to Border Security policies . Thats Something Senate republicans who are in favor of ukraine aid are banking on. I talked to senator Lindsey Graham who said, for example, i dont care if its jim jordan, he hopes someone the house coalesces around someone to be speaker. But he told me like others in the senate they hope the senate leads on a big package on ukraine, something that is joined with Border Security policies, although i dont know if that administration has move to continue building the border wall takes away some of their leverage there. Thats something well have to see. And theres certainly growing concerns among republicans that election for Speaker Setup for wednesday, they may not be able to get an election done then. Nbc news capitol hill correspondent julia circen, thank you so much for starting us off this morning. Really appreciate it. We turn to another headline breaking overnight. Elsewhere, the Biden Administration says it will now expand former President Donald Trumps wall on the Mexican Border and start deporting thousands of venezuelans who unlawfully eered the country. The two moves are seen as a reversal by the white house under intense political pressure to stop the number of migrants entering the u. S. Illegally. During his president ial campaign biden, of course, blasted efforts to build a wall along the u. S. Mexico border calling it, quote, not serious policy solution. But notably the white house of lateas faced increasing criticism from Democratic Leaders who say the influx of migrants is overwhelming their resources to aist them. President ben was asked about the Border Wall Announcement before a meeting in the oval office with his National Security team yesterday. Heres what the president had to say. I tried to reappropriate to redirect that money. They didnt, they wouldnt, and in the meantime theres nothing under the law other than they have to use the money to appropriate. I cant stop that. Do you believe the Border Wall Works .
