New PICUM report on labour migration policies
31 Mar 2021
Labour migration plays a crucial role in European economies and will continue to do so as countries look to build back better in recovery from the pandemic. Yet the design of labour migration policies has enormous impacts on how successful outcomes are for all involved: governments, employers, migrant workers and communities in countries of origin and destination. The Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants (PICUM) – of which LSI is member – published a new report, Designing labour migration policies to promote decent work.
According PICUM ‘Everyone benefits when we provide job security and decent work, information and choices to all workers: workers can enforce their labour rights and are paid fair wages; employers face fair competition in the market; and our economies and communities thrive when we match skills and labour needs’. This report explores the labour migration policy landscape at EU level and provides recommendations to improve labour migration governance at all levels. Recommendations aim towards a system of streamlined and efficient procedures that provide renewable permits of reasonable initial duration, to work in any occupation, and enable autonomy, mobility in the labour market and social inclusion. The report also includes indicators to assist the assessment of existing programmes and analyses the “demand-driven” model for labour migration in Sweden, as a case study. The report is available in English, French, Dutch, Spanish and Czech. You can also read more in PICUM’s blog here
