‘No quick resolution’ in sight for ice jam, flooding along St. Clair River Updated Feb 11, 2021; Facebook Share EAST CHINA, MI — Talk about whiplash. Now, ice is causing flooding along the connecting channel between Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair along Michigan’s thumb region. Local authorities declared a state of emergency last week after the floating brash ice jammed together and began impeding the river’s flow. “This one did pop up rather quickly,” said Mark White, St. Clair County deputy emergency manager. “Those strong sustained northerly winds just drove all the ice into the river.” Authorities kicked into high gear in early February along the 40-mile river, which is prone to ice jams in the winter and spring as Lake Huron drains through the waterway along the Michigan-Canada border, which narrows slightly as it empties into Lake St. Clair through a delta system.
