Rather quickly, new cases arose, opening up still-raw social wounds. Within shouting distance of the city’s courtroom, the April 11 shooting of Daunte Wright, another Black man, forced release of video footage and resignation of an officer in charge of training who “mistook” a pistol for a taser gun. The next week, police shootings of people of color continued in Elizabeth City, North Carolina (Andrew Brown, Jr.); and of teenagers in Columbus, Ohio (Ma'Khia Bryant) and Chicago, Illinois (Adam Toledo). Of course, political interests always twist events to rhyme with ideological goals, and we should not be surprised that the Floyd verdict fell victim to bickering partisanship.
