Parents plead as G7 demands 'immediate release' of Belarusian journalist

The parents of a jailed Belarusian journalist pleaded for help Thursday as it emerged that Russia is blocking European airline flights that avoid Belarus airspace in a diplomatic battle over his arrest.

The hunger strike comes after two days of protest after the Belarusian leader Aleksandr Lukashenko deployed a fighter jet to force a Ryanair flight, en route from Athens to Vilnius, to land in Minsk, where authorities removed dissident Belarusian journalist Roman Protasevich from the flight. European Union leaders have agreed to set sanctions against Belarus, including banning Belarusian airlines from using the Union's airspace and airports.
